So you want the self-doubt back?

I did not respond. The fae were walking away, and I had little time to get into the cell and break the monster out before our connection broke. If they walked away too far, I would not be able to tell them to stay away.

They left the manor, and I let go of the breath I’d been holding in.

I walked into the light and took a right when I reached where the guards had been standing a moment ago. Another hallway welcomed me, and I saw the cells lined up on either side.

The monster was in the first cell. I did not see the three bandits whom the townsfolk had imprisoned here, but they were not my concern.

The monster was sitting in the middle of its cell. Its eyes were cast down, and it was completely motionless. The same stench that all monsters had reached me, forcing me to breathe through my mouth as I stared at its torn wings. The creature looked pitiful and my heart ached for it.

Realization hit me.

I don’t have a key, I can’t let it out.

You don’t need one, the girl replied to the thought.

The monster moved just then. I hadn’t even heard the exchanging of commands this time, but the girl told the monster to move, and it did, just like that.

Within seconds, it was on its feet. It moved quickly. The monster closed the distance between us swiftly and grabbed the bars to its cell. A low growl filled its chest and enlarged it before it ripped through the iron bars as if they were sticks of butter.

The cage door made a loud noise as it fell to the side.

The monster was out.

And once again, as though it required dark-eyed girl's command to do anything, it stopped moving.

The monsters can break iron bars? I asked, fear tightening my chest. This would change everything. All the monsters the Unseelie kept in cells could break away any second.

They can’t,the girl said, shutting down the worrying spiral in me at once. This one was an earth elemental, so I made him use his powers to rip through the iron. He could have moved through the stone as well, but I thought this looks better.

Then, she added, he will follow you.

I stared at the monster. I had to look up to stare at his face, but I could see no hints of emotion there.

He’s not here, you know, the girl said. He’s buried deep within, just like they all are.

I remember, I replied as I turned away from the monster.

The monster followed me.

Soon, we were out on a crispy night. The guards were far enough that there was no chance of us running into them as we turned the other way. We left the manor’s garden and went out into the street together. It was the dead of the night, and luckily, no one was there to witness my crime as I walked to the edge of the town where the forest began.

The monster did not thank me or do anything to show me that he understood what was happening as the girl ordered him to run away. I watched him go for a few moments until he disappeared into the darkness of the thick forest.

When I turned around, I heard the horns.

They know the monster is out, the girl said needlessly. You’re in trouble.

I felt Fiona right then. She was reaching to me with her empath powers, and although her message did not contain any words, I could feel it deep within.

Anger. Doubt. Resentment.

I’m waiting for you in the forest, I told her, hoping she could receive the message even though she could not respond. I’m sorry. I freed the monster. Bring my things and horse?

I felt her frustration in response. She had received my message.
