Kieran jumped off his horse as well, followed by Dearen. As Kieran walked toward us, Dearen grabbed the reins of the horses to tie them around branches to ensure they did not run away.

I looked down at Brigid.

“I’m sorry,” I said. “I asked the girl to remove my fear of using healing magic. I might have been too courageous. I must have messed with her vision.”

“I prefer being blind over being dead,” Brigid said, straightening while still sitting down and bringing her hand up to her cheek to touch the blood. “It seems I should have been dead.”

I felt a tear rolling down my cheek, but I was wet already. I did not wipe it off.

“You can’t see anything?” I asked.

Brigid opened her eyes cautiously. The pain on her face was immediate, but this time, instead of closing her eyes, she put one hand on her forehead to cover them. The pain subsidized; I could tell it from her face.

“I can see,” she said. “It’s just... The light feels too much unless I cover my eyes. It is as if I’m looking straight into the sun.”

“Let’s go to the shade,” Dearen suggested. “Perhaps she’ll be more comfortable there.”

“We can rest for the night,” Kieran replied.

We carried Brigid to the shade underneath the tree closest to us. Brigid blocked the sun from her face with her hand as we entered the shadow, but she kept her eyes wide open. Once she was in the shade, Brigid’s hand dropped.

She smiled.

“I think I’m fine now,” she said, meeting my gaze. Then, as though she believed it had been a temporary thing, she tried looking toward the grass where the sun hit. Her expression twisted with pain, but she did not look away. “I think I’m getting used to it.”

“I’m sorry,” I whispered.

“Don’t be,” Brigid said, putting a hand on my shoulder and squeezing it comfortingly. “You saved my life.”

Fiona was smiling too. Dearen nodded to show he agreed with Brigid.

Kieran did not meet my gaze.
