I recognized her voice at once.x

“Orla!” I called to her, and before she could respond, I darted out of my room.

The young guard stopped.

His gaze darted between Orla and me. She saw my face and knew at once what I needed.

I felt her touch inside my mind. I appreciated her attempt to make the fear go away. It worked. I relaxed a bit.

The guard stood beside her, not knowing what to do.

“What happened?” Orla asked again. “I heard your fear. Are you okay?”

“Yes,” I replied, ashamed that my fear had been loud enough to make her search me out. “I am. But there is a girl... She... She killed herself.”

“You heard her...” The guard repeated, his mouth opening and closing as though he couldn’t finish the thought. He took a few steps toward us and stood behind Orla. His eyes were wide as though he could not believe what he was hearing.

Orla didn’t pay him any attention. Her gaze darted past me and focused on the older soldier standing next to Liltra’s room.

“Did they touch her?” She asked.

The young guard looked appalled that she would ask such a thing. For a second, he seemed as though he would say something about that, but as Orla’s gaze darted toward him, the little courage he had, fled away.

“We took her down,” he said.

“Do we know why she did this?” Orla asked.

When the guard didn’t reply, I did.

“Her friend didn’t know why she would,” I replied. “But she mentioned wanting to distract Liltra. Her name was Liltra. She worked in the...

“Fire rooms,” Orla finished my sentence. “I know who she is.”

I nodded.

“I was going to alert the king’s guard, Master Orla,” the young guard said.

She dismissed him with a small gesture. He turned around and took off.

“Bryn,” Orla turned to the king’s soldier standing guard outside Liltra’s room.

“Master Orla,” he bowed.

Orla walked toward Liltra’s room, and I followed her. I did not look inside the room to see Liltra lying on the bed as Orla stepped inside.

“She used the sheet?” Orla asked.

Her gaze wandered across the room, examining, observing.

“It seems so,” the soldier replied. “She made a tight noose. She used the iron hook to hang it.”

I looked up. The chandelier hook was still there, although the soldiers had removed the sheet dangling from it.

“Did anyone see anything?” Orla asked.

“The maid next door found her,” the soldier replied. “She was her friend.”

“I will go and talk to her myself,” Orla said and turned to me. “You should come with me.”
