“Yes,” I replied, my pulse racing as I realized what Orla was saying. “Supper time is quiet around here.”

“It is,” Orla said, urging me to go on.

“So why didn’t Seren hear a thing when Liltra pushed her chair away?” I thought out loud.

“And if she wanted to kill herself,” Orla added. “Why didn’t Liltra lock her door to ensure no one saved her at the last moment?”

“Perhaps she wanted to be found,” I replied.

“Perhaps,” Orla said. “But I should’ve heard her thoughts if her pain was big enough to make her take her own life. I heard your fear. I heard Seren’s grief. Something blocked me from feeling Liltra’s pain. Or fear.”

“Fear?” I asked, my insides twitching with dismay.

“Fear for her life,” Orla mumbled.
