With that, I darted toward him. They looked surprised, possibly because they did not think I would make the first move. Perhaps they thought I would flee, and that was why they had decided to confront me here, where someone could easily walk in on us.

My fist landed on his right cheek before Hogan could do anything. I felt the bone bending to give way to the pressure, and as Hogan’s lips parted in a groan, my knuckles flared with pain and heat.

I had landed a punch, but that was all I could do in this fight. As soon as they shook off their shock, Laisren and the other boy ran toward me to grab my arms and bend them behind me. Hogan straightened and checked his cheek to evaluate the damage.

When he met my gaze, his anger was like a fire that could burn my skin.

He spat. I saw a drop of blood as his spit landed on the stone floor. My lips twitched with a mean smile.

“You caught me off guard,” He said, his voice guttural and full of fury. “That’s going to be the only blow you can land.”

With that, Hogan stepped forward and punched me in the face. The adrenaline rushing through my veins somewhat prevented the pain, but the heat focused on where his fist landed. My lip split open, and I tasted blood. Hogan did not stop there; he punched me in the stomach as his friends tightened their grip on me.

My eyes teared up with pain as I bent awkwardly. If it weren’t for his friends holding me up, I would fall.

“You’re nothing,” Hogan said, taking a pause and grabbing me by the chin to force me to meet his gaze. “The only reason you’re here is because the queen took pity on you for losing your sister. I bet she was as useless as you were.”

“I bet their mother laid with a dark fae to have his offspring,” Laisren offered, his voice carrying the hints of a grin.

“Tainted blood,” the tall boy offered.

My ears started to buzz as the boys snickered. Anger rolled through me. They kept taunting me, but I could not hear them. I felt my cheeks heating up. They were going to beat me up, but my fear for that was not as strong as the humiliation their words caused.

A sudden strength came over me, fueled by my fury. I pulled my arm away from the tall boy and before they could stop me, I slapped him right on the nose using the back of my hand. The boy brought his hands up to his nose as blood poured. He let me go.

I licked my opened lip and grinned. The salty taste made me feel like an animal. When I pushed Laisren away from me and made him stumble away, I turned to Hogan.

There was fear in him. It was appropriate. I now knew the taste of blood even though it had been mine.

He raised his hands above his head, fearing my next strike would land there. Instead, I kicked him in the stomach and laughed as he bent into two. I kicked him again, and he was down. The tall boy tried to grab my arm, but I pushed him away. He hit the wall behind him, the cracking sound coming from his head making his eyelids drop at once. He slid on the wall and became limp once he reached the floor.

“Hold him!” Hogan shouted.

Laisren took a step toward me. I turned to him and growled. His eyes widened with surprise and he hesitantly took a step back. Hogan got up. He made fists, but I was staring at his swelling eye.

His fists would not help him.

I kicked him with all my strength, and he fell. I cackled with laughter as I stood over him and readied myself to end him.

“Feremir!”

Aislinn’s voice woke me from the animalistic haze I’d found myself in. When I finally looked toward the end of the hallway, I saw her walking toward us. Master Leo was right behind her.

The boys groaned. They were scattered around me as though I had been a whirlwind of violence they could not resist.

“What is this?” Master Leo asked needlessly as the two of them quickly walked toward us.

“They attacked me,” I explained.

Master Leo’s brows raised with doubt as he quickly walked toward us. Aislinn followed him behind.

My lip was split. Blood dribbled as I spoke, but that was all the visible injury I had sustained in this fight. It would be difficult to convince anyone that the boys were the ones who had attacked me. Their condition was much worse.

“Explain yourself,” Master Leo said. “What did you do?”

“We were coming out of supper,” Hogan said, getting up with his friend’s help and facing the master. His right eye was quickly swelling and already had some color around it. “He attacked us.”

“He’s lying!” I shouted. I was tasting blood again, but this time, I could not be sure if that sensation was real. “They attacked me. They...”
