Another growl roamed in the forest. This time, it was loud enough to wake Fiona up. She straightened on her bedroll. I felt her reaching toward me using her empath magic. She felt my fear and it became hers too.

“What is it?” Dearen asked beside her.

“Monsters,” I told them. “Cari is gone.”

Dearen reached for his sword, and Fiona nudged Brigid to wake her up. But we were too slow. The monsters were already here.

I felt the leaves on my right side ruffling. The warning did not give us any more than a second.

“Jasmine!” Kieran shouted as the monster jumped from the shadow.
