“No,” I said. And within a single breath, I told Orla everything I’d discovered since this morning.

Orla’s expression tightened as she listened. Toward the end, she got up and walked to the windows looking at the northern mountains. Her back was turned to me as I finished my words.

“An earth elemental could have shaped that hook,” she said. “An earth elemental might also be able to pass through walls if the walls are made of stone. The rooms in the castle all have stone walls.”

My pulse raced. “That was what we thought too. Do you think the murderer passed through the wall to go into my room after killing Liltra?”

“They must have,” Orla replied, turning to Xira and me. “They made the hook to make it seem like Liltra hung herself. Then, when Seren got up, they used their magic to shape the stone, perhaps creating a gap in the stone. If the wall is thick enough, they might even have stayed inside it. Once everyone was gone, they went into your room, hid there, and then escaped when no one was looking.”

“That helps, does it not?” Lady Xira asked. “How many earth elementals are there in Winter Castle? That eliminates a lot of fae.”

“It does,” Orla replied. “But finding the murderer isn’t as important as finding out who gave the order for the murder.”
