“Who attacked them?” Kieran asked as the innkeeper opened the door to let us in.

“Bandits,” he replied. “Monsters. You choose. The Seelie Queen might not find anything to conquer when she gets here.”

He ended on that grim note, taking off with a quick bow.

Dearen was the last one to enter the room.

It had been challenging to keep my tongue until we were alone.

“We should do something,” I said as he closed the door behind him. “We can’t let them kill the monster.”

“He had a point, though, that old man,” Kieran replied, not meeting my gaze as he walked over to the window to stare out into the dark sky. “We cannot take it with us. We cannot force them to care for the monster when they can’t feed themselves. And we cannot simply free it.”

I hesitated. My friends did not know about the girl inside my mind. They did not know that I had the power to stop the monster from circling back and attacking the village. And if I told them, there would be more questions about the girl inside my mind. And I did not want to tell them that she had inflicted me with monstrosity to keep our connection.

Yes,the girl said, don’t tell them that. They might decide to kill you or abandon you if you do. And you will need them to reach me.

They won’t kill me, I told her, but they might try to trap me so that I don’t turn and harm others.

You won’t turn, the girl said.

They can’t risk it, I replied.

“We do not know if monsters become fae again,” Dearen noted. I felt he was reading my mind when he added, “If it were me, I would prefer death.”

Silence fell in the room. Fiona seemed thoughtful. Brigid had sat down on one of the beds. She looked tired as she took her boots off and lay on the bed.

No one said anything. It seemed my friends wanted to forget the problem and focus on the journey ahead.

I realized that no one was on my side, including my friends.

I needed to handle this on my own.
