“They must have put some kind of alarm on the wall after we passed through,” Fiona said. “What do we do?”

“I need your help,” Dearen said to Kieran.

Kieran took a step forward and lent his conjuring magic to Dearen. The two of them focused on the wall before us, and soon, a door started appearing again. Still, it seemed they had to fight someone off to make the door stay.

Brigid took a step forward to open the door.

“You have to hurry,” Kieran said through gritted teeth.

They’re coming, Cari warned me.

“The guards are getting closer,” I added my warning to Kieran’s. “Let’s go.”

Brigid was the first to pass through the conjured door, and as soon as she did, it disappeared for a second. I almost screamed as I thought Brigid was stuck inside the wall, but after a few seconds, Dearen conjured the wall again, and when I opened the door, we saw Brigid standing safely on the other side.

We each passed through as the guys held the door open. It seemed a tiring task. I saw sweat dripping on Kieran’s forehead as Fiona passed through the door. Then, Dearen told Kieran to go before him. The door flickered and disappeared as soon as Kieran passed through.

With great effort, Kieran and Dearen opened the door once again for Dearen to pass. Just as we started hearing footsteps, the door disappeared.

“Let’s run!” I sent a message to my friends through our minds. “I’ll hide us. Don’t worry about making noise. Just hurry!”

The guards stepped into the little clearing we were in just as I cloaked us all against their minds, using the last of my strength. The guards were confused for a second. They found it hard to believe that we were not before them since they had seen us before I could reach their minds.

Still, when I pushed, they had no choice but to believe me.

One was a tall man with broad shoulders, and the other was bulky. They both had black hair, or it seemed so in the darkness of the forest as we turned away and ran.

I kept my magic on their minds until I could no longer feel them. We were running blindly in the night, but Brigid was leading us, so we did not fall into any ditches, nor did we trip over roots as we ran as fast as we could.

They’ll send a message, Cari said. There are too many of them that know you were here. We can’t stop them all.

Just help us get away, I told her, doing my best to focus on the guards behind us as I ran through branches and trees that hit every part of my body. We’ll deal with that later.

She knows, Cari said, her tone carrying the edge of fear. She will know you were in her city.

I know, I told her. I know.
