“Brigid can see, can’t you?” Cari asked. There was a hint of amusement in her tone.
“I can, indeed,” Brigid replied. “It’s odd that you were with us all along, and we haven’t spoken at all.”
“We spoke once,” Cari replied. “When Jasmine passed out.”
“Yes,” Dearen said. “But all you did was shout us orders and then leave suddenly.”
“I couldn’t use her body like that for long,” Cari replied. “It would harm her.”
“Thank you for that,” I said.
“Will we have to fight our way to the weapon?” Kieran asked.
“Yes,” Cari replied. “But we will win. I’m on your side, so it will be a very easy win.”
“Why doesn’t the queen guard her weapon better?” Dearen asked. “It should be very important for her if it’s how she keeps the monsters under her control.”
“She is guarding it as best as she can,” Cari replied. “I am the scary guard that you wouldn’t be able to pass. The soldiers are just there for show.”
Cari stopped walking. I realized that we’d reached another double door only when Brigid spoke.
“Is this it?” She asked. “Is the weapon behind that door?”
“Where are the guards?” Dearen asked.
The doors opened wide, and Brigid moaned. This room was generously lit, and she had taken off her rag to see in the hallway's darkness.
We entered the circular room. There were doors everywhere and standing mirrors placed in between them. The place seemed like a hub of something; I guessed this was how anyone actually got inside the castle. Mirrors could be used as portals. Cari walked to the middle of the room, spun around, and gave us a shining smile.
“Here is the weapon,” she said.
“Where is it?” Fiona asked, her gaze wandering across the room cautiously.
The room was completely empty except for the mirrors and the doors. I wondered if the queen had devised some kind of a magical way to control the monsters through these mirrors.
“Here,” Cari said, cocking her head to the side and seeming worried for a second before she forced her smile to widen. “I am the weapon.”
