I had been correct when I assumed she had been using Casja’s eyes to talk to me. As soon as the words slipped her mouth, I felt her inside my mind, penetrating my will and taking over my sight to see what I was talking about.

But it was too late.

“We are fine,” Tynan said behind me as he climbed out of the portal too. “We had a little bit of trouble but...”

But I could not focus on him.

That guard! I thought as loudly as I could, hoping Cari was here to listen now.

Cari didn’t hide herself from me like she usually did. She looked through me as her fear and shock reverberated in me.

I don’t feel him, Cari said. And I’d never seen him before.

Of course not. Casja hadn’t seen the man the last time he had been here. Her back was turned to him, just like it had been a moment ago. Cari had to have been in her mind back then, too.

Cari hadn’t seen the man. And for some reason, she hadn’t felt him through mind magic either.

Control him, I told Cari.

As the man spun around and dashed across the prison, I heard Cari’s response echo in my mind.

I can’t, she said. He’s closed off.

The man had already reached the prison bars. He grabbed the cell door and darted outside into the hallway.

“No!” I said, darting into a run to catch him. “He’s going to sound the alarm!”

The man had already reached the end of the hallway as I managed to reach the cell door. Before I could reach the exit, he disappeared into the dark hallway.

This was bad. I had to get him before he did something that could ruin everything.

I didn’t feel him at all, Cari’s thoughts echoed in my mind. I don’t know how that’s possible.

We have to catch him, I thought. That was the only important thing right now. As I pushed the barred door that the guard had left unlocked and entered the barred hallway, the guards sitting outside did not even flinch.

I ran by them and went after the guard.

When I reached the door at the end of the hallway and pushed it open, I saw a piece of fabric disappearing at quite a bit of distance. This man was a fast runner.

I had to be faster.

All my focus was on catching up to him. My legs burned from being strained but I could not stop to rest.

I had to catch him.

He had disappeared into one of the circular stairwells, leading to one of the towers. My breathing became heavy as I ran up the stairs. I could not see the man anymore, but there was only one way to go.

On the second floor, it felt like my lungs were about to give up. I did not know how the man managed to outrun me so easily, but just as I began to doubt my ability to catch up to him, I felt my lungs expanding.

Casja’s wind was still with me. It helped. I picked up my pace and kept running up the stairs.

I had to get him. I could not let him ruin everything just when we were about to break the prisoners out.

But the man was fast. I caught up to him two floors up, merely because that was where he had stopped. He had nowhere to go as I entered a circular room with windows on all sides. We were in one of the watch towers.

From the windows, I could see the rising sun falling to the crimson mountains in the distance.

But he wasn’t here for the view.
