He had come for the mirrors. Four standing mirrors were neatly placed on the other side of the room.

This was the portal tower.

“Stop!” I shouted at him. “I won’t hurt you.”

The man was breathing heavily. His face was red from running. Sweat poured out of his forehead. He was cornered, with nowhere to go.

And yet, he smiled.

“You cannot,” he said. “My mind is protected.”

He’s right, Cari said. I thought she was in love with him but... The mind magicker was focused on him. She is protecting only him.

You can’t stop him? I asked Cari.

No, Cari replied.

My heart sank as one of the portals started to shimmer right beside him. A loud, ominous sound rose from all over the castle, echoing off the walls.

He’s a portaler, I thought. He sounded the alarm.

Cari did not respond.

Chapter 22: Kieran

The portals opened and they came.

The guard jumped to the side to hide behind the mirror as a soldier wearing heavy armor stepped through the portal. Beside her, the other mirrors shimmered too, glimmering with the light coming from the other side.

And once my eyes adjusted to that bright light, my pulse quickened.

Hundreds of soldiers stood on a grass field. The portal was opened into some kind of a hill, which allowed me to see them despite the narrowed perspective. There, thousands stood, waiting for their turn to step right into the tower room we were in.

This wasn’t good.

If they were to come in, we didn’t stand a chance.

I drew my sword, taking up a defensive stance. The soldier who had entered ahead of me mirrored my action, weapon at the ready.

I did not know her, but the sheer confidence with which she gripped her weapon warned me of the impending challenge.
