I didn’t say the word ‘resistance,’ but I knew we were both thinking it. I hoped our thoughts would get lost in the sea of thoughts rising from the fae around us at the great hall.

“I do,” she said. “I know where they meet now. We change places often and have a way of finding out the next. We can go there, but sending a message is much safer.”

“Monsters who remain in Terlyth stay with the resistance,” I said. “If the queen knows where they are, they’ll capture members too. We can’t wait too long...”

Aislinn raised her hand to shush me. I nodded, but looked at her sternly to make her respond.

I let her shush me, but made sure she understood the pleading in my gaze. Finally, she gave in to it.

“You might be right,” she said softly. “We might have to act quicker than that.”

She didn’t continue, which was confusing. But her gaze darted up, focusing on something behind me.

“Enjoying a little breakfast with your girlfriend?” Hogan said as he walked next to our table.

I did not attempt to hide my annoyance.

He expected me to blush or be embarrassed about his comment. I could tell it from the taunting smile that covered his ugly face.

I wouldn’t give that to him.

“Yes,” I replied as calmly as I could muster. “We were about to be done.”

He looked surprised but he quickly hid it.

“The queen’s lapdog is growing up!” He patted me on the shoulder a bit too roughly as his voice became louder than necessary.

His tone was condescending. I could tell that was his aim.

But he didn’t matter in the grand context of things. He was just an angry boy who wanted revenge. I did not have to concern myself with his taunting.

“We all have to grow up someday,” I said, turning to look at Aislinn as I got up. “Shall we, dear?”

Aislinn nodded. She grabbed her book and didn’t look at Hogan once as she got up to stand beside me.

I met Hogan’s gaze.

“You have a nice meal, soldier,” I said.

“I already did,” Hogan said needlessly behind me as we walked away from him.
