“You can come along,” I said, not knowing even then if that was actually a good idea. “But you cannot use your mind magic against us, ever again. If we are to trust you, you have to earn it.”

“I will,” Cari said. “So how will we save the princess?”

There was a short pause.

They looked at me again.

“Orla is back at the Winter Castle, hiding,” Casja interrupted the silence. “If we can find a way to send her a message, she can help Fiona escape.”

Orla was alive. That was good. Orla was strong enough to protect Fiona until we got a chance to save her. But then again, even Orla hadn’t been able to protect Father...

“I know a way to send a message to Orla,” I said. “We should head out at dawn. We have weeks of travel ahead of us.”

“Gethin can open a portal for us,” Cari said.

“They can track those,” I replied.

“No, they cannot,” Cari said. “Gethin is monster folk. Their magic works differently. Portalers won’t sense his portals.”

“She is right,” Gethin said. “When I opened the portal at the island, it felt different. And the other former monsters who came in through portals said the queen’s portalers cannot sense our portals.”

“They were unable to follow us when we left the island,” Brigid suggested. “Perhaps they are right.”

“I can fly us too,” Casja said. “I did it with Xira.”

“I think I prefer the portal,” Cari said.

And for the first time, I agreed with Cari.

Chapter 3: Fiona

Lord Fearghas did not bother to look at me as he took a step to stand before the throne. Behind him, an eery silence filled the great hall. Most of the lords and ladies waiting for their turn did not meet my gaze.

Lord Fearghas bowed.

“My King,” he said, looking at Lugh before briefly turning to me to add, “Princess.”

It was odd. Lugh had no claim to my father’s throne. To call me a princess while referring to him as the king was the least logical thing to do. But that was exactly where we were.

Lady Georgia and Lady Elva, standing beside Lord Fearghas, curtsied at the same time as though they had rehearsed it.
