Their pain was mine. I could not let them die.

Kieran’s hug was warm. The monster folk fought and died all around me. I felt their pain as well as their hope. I would try. Allison could live a long life, happy and surrounded by friends and family.

Her throat closed up.

I smiled at Kieran.

“I did it,” I whispered.

He smiled back at me, even though he had no idea what I was talking about.

Once she woke up, I would spread that hope. We could all share it, and revel in it. Everything would be fine. We would—

Allison didn’t move.

Despite her throat mending upon my command, her light refused to reignite. I could not replenish the blood she had lost.

She would not live again.

And I could not force her to.

Chapter 27: Kieran

Jasmine’s face went pale.

“Allison is dead,” she said.

I didn’t know who Allison was, but I could see Jasmine’s pain. I tried to hug her tighter, but she pushed me away gently.

“Protect them, Kieran,” she said. “Help me protect them.”

She was glowing as she forced herself to stand still. Her hands stopped shaking as her gaze darted up to the distance, where the monster folk fought Lugh’s army.

“I will,” I said, trying to find my best path into the fight now that I was down from the battlement. The hilt of my sword was hard against my sweaty hand, and as I tightened my fingers to lift it, the muscles on my arms warmed with that familiar sensation.

Both sides fought bravely. Their magic clashed, creating sparks that lifted dust off the now-ruined ground. There was blood everywhere, and screams rose from all around us.

“We only have to do this for a bit,” Jasmine said. “Gethin and the others are sending the prisoners away. It will be done soon.”

I nodded. It was good to know that Gethin had gained some traction with the help of the monster folk.
