I waited for the usual shimmer to appear on the surface.

It didn’t.

I waited for Yeen to explain what she was doing. But she didn’t.

“What’s the hold-up?” Lord Aster finally asked.

Yeen didn’t reply.

But his question confirmed my suspicions.

Aislinn grabbed my arm. I could almost feel her fear, seeping out of her skin.

Don’t try anything, a voice rang inside my mind. It took me a moment to realize who it was since I had never heard her in my mind.

You are under arrest for treason, Lady Dahlia added before I could even think to move. Resisting will likely result in death.

“Yeen!” Lord Aster shouted. “Snap out of it!”

“She’s in her mind,” I said. “Lady Dahlia is here.”

“You are in on it?” Lord Aster asked, closing the distance between us and grabbing me by the shoulders. “You led them here?”

He shook me hard.

“We did no such thing!” I replied. “We were trying to warn you about them!”

He let go of me, but not before he stared deeply into my eyes as though he could see the truth in them.

“What do we do?” Aislinn asked.

“Any of you can open a portal?” Lord Aster asked.

“No,” we said at once.

“Then we’re doomed,” Lord Aster replied.

We heard the door outside being knocked down. The sounds of hitting and breaking were too obvious to ignore.

“We can’t let them capture us,” Lord Aster said. “It’s time.”

He was looking at Aislinn. Although I wasn’t sure what this was about, Aislinn’s eyes widened with fear.

Still, she nodded.

Lord Aster pulled two vials from his pocket. He gave one to Aislinn and walked quickly to Yeen. He grabbed her hair as Aislinn met my gaze.

“Feremir,” she said. “We know too much about the resistance. You don’t, so if you choose, you can let yourself be captured. They will torture you until you tell them everything you know. It’s your choice.”

She gestured at the vial she was holding, “We will share this if you want.”

Understanding came with shock. Lord Aster was going to give Yeen poison. Then, he and Aislinn were going to drink the contents of those vials.

They were going to kill themselves.

I didn’t think.

Perhaps if I had, I would know that it was not my place to make that decision for her.
