“No!” I shouted. “You cannot do this!”

I jolted toward Aislinn and knocked the vial out of her hand before she could drink it. While doing that, I mistakenly hit Lord Aster. He lost his grip. The two vials fell.

Lord Aster cursed and made a move to catch his vial before it hit the floor, and in doing that, he hit me.

I heard the crashing sound coming off the breaking vials as I lost my balance and fell.

My head hit the frame of the mirror.

The pain was blinding.

But as my eyes closed, it wasn’t darkness that welcomed me.

Chapter 30: Jasmine

It surprised me that Ilerd hadn’t stayed back with the others. He wasn’t monster folk, which meant while he was being hurt in the battle, I had no connection with him.

He stirred in his makeshift bed as I entered the makeshift cave the earth elementals had built as an infirmary. There were only a few in here other than him since I had already healed the monster folk from afar.

The families of the monster folk were the only wounded left. Since I could not heal them from afar, I had come to them.

Ilerd opened his eyes. The fog in his expression quickly disappeared as he noticed me.

Anger took over.

I knew it was the cowardice of guilt, but I decided to go to him last.

As I treated the other wounded, I could feel his gaze fixed on the back of my head. I amended bones and mended skin, and did my best to ignore that feeling. The woman whose chest was almost spliced open by a deep wound thanked me as she walked out of the cave, fully healed. The others chose to lay in their beds for a while longer, but everyone was healed.

Except for Ilerd.

I turned to him, and before I could even approach his bed, he raised his hand to stop me.

“I don’t want you near me,” he said.

He wasn’t crying, but grief was all over him.

“I’m sorry about Allison,” I said softly.

“You don’t get to be,” he said. “You told her to go to war and now she’s dead. What was that for? To save the Unseelie lords who were kept in that prison? How will I explain that to my son? We are not Unseelie. Why did we fight for the Dark Prince’s claim to the throne?”
