“Take them to the palace and lock them up,” Lady Dahlia said to Lady Cara. “Then wait for further instructions.”

“Yes, my lady,” Lady Cara nodded.

Lady Dahlia paused for a second. Her gaze darted toward Yeen.

“I’ll take her with me,” she said.

Lady Cara seemed offended but she did not object.

Lady Dahlia turned around without another word. With Yeen walking silently behind her, she turned a corner and was gone.

I didn’t know what to do. Lady Dahlia was about to go and tell the queen that the one she had been searching for, the one in the prophecy was Jasmine. Luckily, Jasmine was safely away from Terlyth. At least for now... But once the queen found out, she would do everything necessary to get her hands on her.

Yeen was gone. Lord Aster had said she wanted to join the other former monsters but stayed only to help the resistance. That meant she knew where the former monsters were. Where Jasmine was...

It was all over. The queen had all the means necessary to end this once and for all.

“Follow my lead,” Lady Cara said.

I gave her the most hateful gaze I could muster with the worry that filled my mind. My hate toward her was nothing compared to my concern for Jasmine, but still, as I met her gaze, the spark in me grew a little.

“You won’t win this,” I said, not believing it myself. “The queen was the one making the monsters. She turned fae into monsters. She called you onto the trials to turn you into one too. You became a champion, but she’ll turn against you on your first mistake. A tyrant will come for everyone who supports her, one way or another. It might not be now, but it will happen.”

Lady Cara’s face remained blank. Her gaze darted away from me and fell onto the others following us from behind.

“I know,” she said.

I hated her. She was turning a blind eye to all the atrocities committed by the queen. And for what? Wealth? Power? Status? She was just as evil.

“We’re gonna have to fight,” she whispered.

The confusion made me stumble. Luckily, Lady Cara had to have been expecting it. She tightened her grip on my arm and steadied me.

“What?” I asked, keeping my voice lower now.

“There are only three of them,” she said. “We can take the soldiers with Lord Aster. He’s an excellent fighter. When we make our move, run and hide.”

She was quickly speaking in a low voice.

“There are nine soldiers,” I said. “Can’t you count?”

“I can,” she replied. “But trust me, there are three soldiers.”

“Why would I trust you?” I asked, keeping my voice low despite my anger toward her.

She seemed taken aback for a second before she nodded.

“You don’t have to,” she said. “Just protect yourself.”

We were nearing the center square. There, there would be other soldiers of the queen, patrolling the streets. Lady Cara stopped in the middle of a narrow street that was empty of other fae.

“This is enough,” she said, her tone authoritative as she turned around to address the soldiers following her. “We will take it from here.”

The man with blue eyes and a dark beard released Aislinn's arm as soon as he heard the order. The other man raised his brows.

“We should accompany you, my lady,” he said. “The prisoners might escape.”

“Are you telling me what to do, soldier?” Lady Cara asked angrily.
