“No,” the soldier replied hesitantly. “But Lady Dahlia would punish us if she heard we didn’t protect you and the prisoners.”

“Lady Dahlia knows that this all has to be done in secret,” Lady Cara replied.

“We can use the back entrance,” the third soldier suggested. He had a weathered face and a scar that made him look scary. Even though he was younger than the soldier who had objected to Lady Cara’s command in the first place, he seemed more confident than him.

Lady Cara gave the man a look. I thought she would argue with him again, but instead, she turned to Lord Aster.

“Fight!” she shouted.

Then, before anyone could move, Lady Cara disappeared.

Six of the soldiers disappeared with her.

For a split second, I thought they had just disappeared into a portal. But the wet ground beneath us did not shimmer like portals did.

The blue-eyed soldier shrieked and fell to the ground. The other two soldiers seemed shocked, but they assumed their fighting stances within the next second.

The second soldier was stabbing the air with his spear.

Of course.

Lady Cara was a light crafter. She could make herself invisible. She could make illusions too. Like soldiers... Soldiers who stand with her and never speak... The six soldiers who had disappeared weren’t invisible like Lady Cara. They had never been real.

Lord Aster’s wind swirled around us, going straight toward the other two soldiers.

“Come,” I grabbed Aislinn’s arm and pulled her into safety. The soldiers weren’t focused on us, but we were in a narrow alley and there was no place to hide.

We had to run. But I couldn’t help but watch.

Lord Aster unleashed his elemental powers upon the two remaining soldiers. With the soldiers momentarily incapacitated, Lady Cara reappeared, her form materializing from thin air. She wasted no time, swiftly moving towards the fallen men, her steps purposeful and determined. Her sword shone for a moment as she moved it swiftly. She disarmed them with skillful precision, expertly knocking their swords aside and rendering them defenseless. Lord Aster’s howling wind whipped around them, causing their hair to fly wildly and obscuring their vision. The clash of steel against steel echoed through the air, accompanied by grunts and shouts of exertion.

Lady Cara was almost like the hero I imagined her to be before I knew the truth about her. The Silver Lady... The hero and the assassin...

All three soldiers were on the ground as quickly as it had started.

The other six soldiers were nowhere to be seen.

I thought we won.

But the soldiers, albeit incapacitated momentarily, weren’t passed out. One of them turned on the ground to lie flat on his back and suddenly, a river flew out of his opened palms, darting into the sky and forming a shape I did not recognize.

It was a sign.

A few seconds of silence were all we had before the chaos began anew.

Horns of Terlyth blared.

They knew something was wrong.

“Run!” Lady Cara shouted at me.

I grabbed Aislinn’s hand.

A group of soldiers entered the street from the other side. They saw their fellow soldiers on the ground, with Lady Cara standing next to them.

They reached for their weapons.

“Boy!” Lord Aster said, looking back over his shoulder to meet my gaze. “What did that woman see in you?”
