The pain, however, did not go away. It turned into a burning sensation that traveled down my arm and made my fingers shake.

I dropped to my knees as my legs gave out. I stared at my hand, trying to grasp what was happening.

I forced myself to stop whimpering, but the pain remained.

In utter confusion caused by that immense pain, I stared at Brigid to ascertain if she was the one who had hurt me.

But she wouldn’t hurt me.

Of course, she wouldn’t.

“What is it?” Brigid asked, kneeling beside me to look at my face.

She seemed as clueless as I was about what was happening.

“It hurts...” I whispered. My gaze was locked on my hand. My nails felt like they were being ripped one by one, and yet, that was not what I was seeing. “It hurts too much...”

I would break. I could feel it.

I just didn’t know what that meant.

“We should stop,” Muir said. “This isn’t normal.”

Brigid said something. But I could not hear her.

The pain swelled in me, becoming something else entirely.

Chapter 34: Kieran

“Most of the prisoners have gone back to their families,” Lord Trechting looked up from the map atop his war table to meet my gaze. “For now, their families are keeping their escape a secret, but Lugh has already sent his messengers to demand their return to him.”

“He can demand all he wants,” Lord Tynan said beside me.

“He knows what we did,” Lord Petret replied. “But he can’t force us into giving up our family members. He knows that too.”

“No,” I replied. “He won’t. He will wait until he is married so that his claim cannot be refuted. If he attacks us now, the lords who remain neutral will turn against him.”

“They should have done that a long time ago,” Lord Tynan said angrily. “Their silence has cost us.”

I nodded. Lords like Lord Harill had remained neutral only because they did not want trouble. If Lugh managed to marry Fiona, he would be the rightful king, which meant there would be no grounds for objection. The neutral lords and ladies did not care that Fiona’s heart was not in this marriage. Royal marriages rarely required love, anyway.
