Although it had felt like sleep, I knew that the answer could not be as simple. I wasn’t a diviner, which meant whatever I saw could not be of the future.

That left only one option... A member of the monster folk suffered as we walked in the forest.

I had felt her pain, so it had to be true.

It had happened to me before, so it would make sense that it had happened again.

What I couldn’t explain was why I was struggling to remember it. The last time I had been pulled into the mind of a former monster because they were in pain, I could remember everything. That was how I had been able to send help to Alisson, while she lay in that ditch.

But now, I could not reach them again. Even the details of the dungeon were fuzzy. It was almost like an idea rather than a memory. A message sent by someone with a single word written on a thought bubble: dungeon.

And whoever it was, they were in pain.

Or had been.

Chapter 36: Kieran

Lady Macill’s carriage stopped at the entrance. Distant music reached us from the other side of the curtained door.

“Here it goes,” Lady Macill mumbled.

I stepped out of the carriage and immediately turned around to offer her my hand. She took my hand and slowly climbed out of the carriage.

Her guard, Gareth, followed her out, looking around as though he had no idea what to do since I’d taken up his duty. Still, as I got behind Lacy Macill and started walking beside him, he seemed to have regained his sense of purpose. His eyes darted up to evaluate our surroundings to make sure his lady was perfectly safe.

I did the same but with a completely different purpose.

Winter Castle was ready for its guests.

The gates leading into the first courtyard were opened, with no intention of being closed anytime soon. That was to be expected. A procession of carriages queued behind ours, each carrying lords and ladies patiently awaiting their turn to disembark and enter.

Dearen was in the carriage with Lord Bracks. They had gone ahead of us, and it did not seem like they had any trouble getting in.

It wasn’t surprising. The courtyard was more crowded than I had ever seen, but it seemed the number of stations on the battlements and at the gates had not been increased as they were supposed to be for events like this. That caused the guards to ignore the nobles and focus on the commoners trying to get inside to see what a royal wedding might look like. Although my disguise wasn’t anything more than a guard’s helmet, the guard with a brown mustache did not even notice me as I walked in behind Lady Macill.

She looked behind to meet my gaze, but I gave her a nod that I hoped she would construe as a polite warning. She quickly looked away, looking embarrassed to have forgotten our pretense.

Lady Macill kept walking and I followed.

There were familiar faces everywhere — lords and ladies waiting to get in and complaining about the wait, servants, and soldiers whom I’ve known my whole life... Though there were more soldiers whom I did not recognize, most of them Lugh’s.
