Chapter 37: Fiona

My brother looked upset, but the turmoil in him could not be compared to what I was feeling. Lugh stood beside me, his beautiful eyes locked onto Kieran as Kieran took a step forward in anger.

Frustration rose in me as my brother spoke.

“These are lies,” Kieran said. “She is being controlled by Lugh’s mind magicker. Sister, try to snap out of it.”

His audacity was mind-boggling. The idea that my dear betrothed would do such a thing was unimaginable.

“You are ruining my wedding,” I said, louder this time, unable to contain my anger. Although I wanted to look demure and regal during my wedding, he was forcing me to be this way, and for that, I hated Kieran.

But I should not have been surprised that he would do this.

Kieran had always been the little boy who was jealous of his older sister for being under the spotlight. Hadn’t he gone off to the trials simply because I had? And now that he could not follow me into the arms of a king, he was trying to ruin my wedding.

But Kieran came to the trials to save me.

That thought was silly at best, which made it easy to squash it. Kieran hadn’t known that I was alive when he volunteered to join the trials. He had done it not to save me, but for glory.

My brother glared at me, but it was not anger that clouded his gaze. He looked... Sad.

Lugh raised his hand to gesture at the guards to seize Kieran. I saw Lord Petret jumping off his chair as though he wanted to aid Kieran, but Lugh’s soldiers stopped him before he could. Two guards came near Kieran and held his arms. I let out a breath of relief once they made sure Kieran could not harm my dear king.

“You cannot do this!” Kieran shouted like a madman. He shook off the guards and turned away from us to address our guests. I hated him for causing a scene in the middle of the most important day of my life. “Lugh killed our father. He is a usurper.”

“Those are lies, Kieran,” Lugh said, his voice deep. I found it impressive how he was able to contain his emotions so perfectly as my future husband smiled despite the wild accusation. “You know they are. Why would the princess agree to marry me if that were true?”

I would have married him even if those things were true. After all, love was supposed to conquer all. But it would not be prudent to say that out loud. Not now. It would go against the sacred bond between man and wife, even if we weren’t married yet.

“You imprisoned anyone who would oppose you,” Kieran turned to meet Lugh’s gaze. “I have witnesses.”

“Traitors!” I shouted. “Your witnesses are all traitors. You are to stop now, Kieran!”

His eyes widened, stopping on me.

“Fiona...” He started.

“No!” I shouted. “Seize him!”

Once King Lugh confirmed the order I gave, his soldiers resumed their attempt to hold Kieran down.

“Make sure he does not utter a single word,” I said, speaking quickly. One of the guards covered Kieran’s mouth as soon as they managed to hold him down. “He has a beast that he conjures.”

“That was all well, my dear,” King Lugh met my gaze with that handsome smile of his. “Thank you for the warning.”

He reached to hold my hand. Excitement rolled through me as I quickly responded to hold his hand. Our fingers brushed against each other for the first time.

And then, a scream broke out.
