And Lugh had a point, although we could resist them for a while, their armies if Lord Harill were to join him would be bigger than any we could gather with the lords who were already on our side. Lord Lugh had inherited his lands and titles from his father, and his father had been a smart man. Lugh’s soldiers alone made up nearly a quarter of the army of the Unseelie, with Lord Harill on their side, they would be incredibly difficult to defeat, especially if others were to join them.

And I could see from the faces of some of the lords that they would.

“War, you say?” Lord Harill asked.

“Yes!” Lugh took a step forward in excitement.

“And then, you will be the king?” Lord Harill asked.

“Yes!” Lugh said, his excitement declining only slightly.

Kieran and I had stayed silent. I opened my mouth to pitch in, but Kieran shook his head. I decided to wait until Lord Harill spoke again.

“I think not,” Lord Harill said.“You let those monsters into Winter Castle so that it would weaken King Duncan. And you used me to undermine him. You are the reason we lost a good king.”

Lugh knew right then that he had lost. As an act of desperation, he made a move toward me, but I was prepared.

I grabbed the arm he’d extended toward me and kicked down his leg. As Lugh screamed in agony, I met Padraig’s gaze.

He nodded.

He got in front of the two soldiers standing with him.

Movement ensued all around us. Lord Petret threw the table before them and pulled out his sword. Lord Trechting pointed the tip of his lance at a soldier who seemed to be aiming at his father. Lady Xira called forth her fire and stepped to the middle to stand with Kieran.

They all did.

The Unseelie got up from their seats; their magic and weapons ready to strike.

I waited for the fighting to start.

It did not.

Everyone looked at me and Lugh. Waiting...

“Attack them!” Lugh shouted at his soldiers.

They did not.

I kicked Lugh’s loins this time. He screamed and fell sideways.

“Good,” I said, turning away from him as Lugh started wailing like a little puppy. “You stay there.”
