“How did it go?” Amarra asked after we managed to get a few mouthfuls of the stew. “Did you save the princess?”

“Our friends will take care of that,” Brigid said. “The Unseelie lords agreed to help them. We should receive news soon.”

“Is that why you are worried?” Amarra asked me.

It was difficult to ignore her when she stared at me like that. Still, I ate another spoonful before responding.

“Yes,” I said.

“But there is something else, isn’t there?” she insisted. “Something about you?”

“You are good,” Brigid commented.

I glared at Brigid, but she shrugged.

“What?” Brigid said. “Was it a secret?”

“Was what a secret?” Amarra pushed.

“I had some issues on our way here,” I said. “I passed out and saw... a dungeon I think. I don’t know what it was.”

“We were thinking she tapped into the mind of another former monster,” Brigid explained.

“A dungeon?” Amarra asked. “What did it look like?”

“Like a dungeon,” I said.

Amarra visibly contained her frustration.

“Do you remember what you saw?” she asked.

I nodded. Her voice had taken on a more serious tone now.

“Were there any markings on the walls? Did you see light coming in? Were there any fae around? Guards outside the cell? What did the corridors look like? Tell me anything you can remember.”

Amarra asked all of her questions with a flat tone. Embarrassment rolled through me. She wasn’t trying to act like a mother now, this was the experienced spy talking. That version of her, I could let help me.

I closed my eyes, trying to remember.

And as soon as I thought about Amarra’s questions, the images came.

“There are no others around me,” I said. “The walls are made of stone. Grey, dirtied. No lights, not even a flicker. I think the only reason I can see is because my eyes have adjusted, and also... My eyes are better than normal.”

“Because you are seeing through the eyes of a former monster,” Amarra commented.

I nodded.

“What else?” Amarra asked.

I didn’t mention the hurt that I felt. My insides had been twisted awkwardly. I was wet with my own blood. I ignored all of those and tried to focus on my surroundings as I looked through her eyes.

“There is something in the wall outside the cell,” I said. “A sign of sorts with letters on it. I can’t read what’s written, but the sign has a light color, white or light blue...”

“Silver,” Amarra said. “The sign says: Surrender your secrets.”

I opened my eyes. Amarra looked disheveled.

“You know where this is?”
