“The soldiers are here,” I whispered. “They’re... They’re just standing there, with the monster folk. They are alive but...”

“Captured,” Amarra whispered. “They are captured.”

She didn’t need to block their minds off like I did. She knew.

“We should find the others,” Casja said. “We should regroup and save them together.”

“We don’t know where they are,” I replied. “This is my fault. The queen’s soldiers heard the message I’d sent them, asking them to regroup by the lake.”

“No use blaming ourselves now,” Brigid said. “What do we do?”

“Can you look to see if you can feel a large group around camp?” I asked Amarra. “Other than the ones by the lake?”

She nodded. Only a few seconds passed before she spoke.

“A cave,” she said. “They’re in a cave. That way.”

We turned away from the lake and went to where Amarra felt the monsters. The fog was starting to lift slowly, but we saw no one as we quickly made our way to the cave.

At the entrance, Muir met us.

“I thought you were captured,” he said, hugging me tightly.

“I’m not,” I whispered. “I closed myself off to you because the queen was using our connection to make you feel each other’s pain.”

“We know,” Muir gestured at us to follow him into the cave. “We should come up with a plan to save the others.”

I nodded.

Casja, Brigid, and Amarra had gone ahead into the cave while Muir kept me outside to hug me. When he turned around, I had every intention to follow him inside.

But then, I could not.

I have your monsters, the queen’s voice rang in my mind, and after all that had happened, the same tingling fear took over my mind as it had when I first heard her voice, back at the arena. Surrender now, or I’ll kill them all.

Chapter 41: Feremir

Ididn’t feel different at all if I kept staring ahead. But whenever I looked down, my stomach lurched.

I didn’t have a body.
