Casja’s gaze widened. Her mouth popped open in surprise. She turned to Brigid.

“Who is that?” she asked. Brigid shrugged.

Amarra took a step forward.

“Prince Kieran,” she said, attempting to hide her anger but failing. “The queen has my daughter. Believe me. “

“You have a daughter?” Lord Tynan asked Amarra as my head started buzzing.

“The Queen of Light attacked our camp,” Amarra completely ignored Lord Tynan. She emphasized every word to show her frustration with us. “You have to help her!”

“Our friends,” Fiona whispered, grabbing Casja’s hand. Casja smiled at Fiona, but it was the emptiest smile I’d ever seen. “Are they all right?”

“They are fine,” Jasmine’s mother said. “But they seemed to have forgotten about Jasmine completely. Jasmine did it. I don’t think she would do anything to harm them, it should go away soon. I’m a mind magicker too, but I tried to undo it and I couldn’t. I hope it’ll go away in time.”

I met the eyes of one of the soldiers who had followed Jasmine’s mother into my room.

“Go and get Gethin,” I told them.

The man nodded and took off at once.

“If the queen has her,” I thought out loud. “She would take her to Terlyth.”

“We don’t know that,” Fiona replied. “Perhaps she...”

“No,” I said. “She wouldn’t... Besides, monster folk can sense if someone happens to her.”

“Gethin will know,” Fiona said, nodding as though she only caught up now.

“Amarra?” Lord Tynan stepped toward Jasmine’s mother. She looked up and met his gaze. “What’s this about a daughter?”

Amarra looked as though she was caught in a lie of sorts. She stared at Lord Tynan and pursed her lips.

“Yes, Tynan,” she said. “She’s your daughter too.”

That revelation would have occupied all my attention if Jasmine wasn’t in danger. Still, Fiona and I exchanged a glance.

“That cannot be,” Lord Tynan spat the words. “It’s been...”

“Twenty-two years,” Amarra said. “Yes.”

“Lord Tynan is Jasmine’s father?” Fiona asked, her tone carrying disbelief.

“Yes,” Amarra said. “She is also being hunted by the Queen of Light because of it.”

“Because Lord Tynan is her father?” I asked.

“We don’t have time to explain all of this,” Amarra said, even though all we could do right now was stand around in my room and wait for Gethin to arrive so that he could open us a portal. Perhaps she realized that too because she resumed speaking. “But yes... The queen prosecuted double fae for decades now. She killed them all or turned them into monsters. That’s what she was doing when she called Jasmine into the trials. Most of your friends too... I assume. They have Seelie and Unseelie parents, or grandparents; ancestors from both realms.”

She said all of this with a quick flat tone, as though she was giving out a report.

“You were her spy,” Lord Tynan said.

It clicked at once. Of course. The only way a Seelie and Unseelie could have a child together was if one was in a place they should not have been. Ever since the big war, only spies traveled between the realms.

“Yes,” Amarra said. “I left Jasmine with someone I trusted in Terlyth. I was wrong, but when I found out what happened, I looked for her.”

“You abandoned her,” Lord Tynan said.
