Chapter 46: Kieran

Brigid walked through the puddle of blood, and the smile on her face did not wither. She and Casja seemed unaware of the ruin of bloodlust that was all around us.

The destroyed camp was empty except for the bodies that lay around. As the soldiers searched the ground, I had to stop myself from pacing around the tents.

I did not want to find her here.

“We are wasting time,” I whispered to Amarra. “We have to go to Terlyth now.”

She looked over her shoulder to meet my gaze. “I know. But we have to make sure she’s not here. If we go to Terlyth and get captured, what do you think Jasmine will do? Even if she hadn’t been caught like we assume?”

“Sound logic,” Lord Tynan intervened, stepping out of one of the burned-out tents to our side and joining us beside the campfire. “But is it truly how you feel?”

It was difficult to bury my sigh. Amarra’s gaze swiftly turned toward the man, but she did not surrender to his hidden accusation. They’d been liked this since we portaled here; bickering like an old couple on the verge of breaking up.

“What are you trying to say?” she asked.

“Nothing,” Lord Tynan replied, attempting to walk away.

Casja smiled at me past Tynan, obviously not listening to the conversation between us at all. Jasmine’s mind magic was still strong.

“If Jasmine is captured,” Amarra said to Tynan’s back, her voice loaded with emotion. “I will attack that palace by myself. Even if it kills me...”

She turned around and stomped off, leaving Lord Tynan’s obviously snappy comeback hanging in the air.

“She has the audacity to claim that loyalty when she...” Lord Tynan started angrily.

“This is not the place or time for such discussions,” I interrupted him. “We need to act swiftly and together, and this arguing of yours is wasting our time.”

He seemed embarrassed as he nodded. “We checked all the tents and nearby caves. Once your friends come back, we can make our way to Terlyth and...”

“Looking to get yourselves killed, are you?”

The familiar voice made my insides feel warmer, if only for a second. Jasmine’s disappearance was making every other emotion suffocate under its weight.

“Cari,” I said, rushing over to her as she appeared behind a bush. I did not care that she had been using her powers to hide from us and listen in on our conversations again. She was here, she could help. “Did you see where Jasmine went? What happened at the camp? Is she all right? Did the queen take her?”

“Stop,” Cari lifted a hand as though she feared a hug. “I don’t know anything. I was on my way to the North when I saw smoke in the distance. I came to check it out and realized that this was the monster folk camp. I don’t know where they are.”

“Some of them came to Qam,” Lord Tynan explained. “They said the queen attacked...”

“Did all the monster folk reach Qam?” she asked.

“No,” I replied. “Why?”

“They will be here,” she seemed to be thinking out loud. “If she has her, that’s... But why didn’t they tell anyone what...”

“What are you talking about?” I snapped. “I don’t understand...”

“The queen was after Jasmine,” Cari replied. “She wouldn’t need the monsters if she had her.”

“Why would the queen be after Jasmine and not the monsters?” I asked.

“Jasmine didn’t want me to say it,” she whispered. “So I won’t. What happened to them?”

She gestured at Casja and Brigid.
