The soldiers reached me just then.
“What did he say?” a man shouted from across the gathered crowd.
“The queen created the monsters!” I managed to shout before the soldier with the clean-shaven oval face grabbed me by the arm. But he hadn’t covered my mouth. “I saw it with my own eyes!”
He covered my mouth right then.
“Bring him to me,” the queen said. “He will be executed with his sister.”
“No!” Jasmine shouted, but as the soldiers started to drag me through the crowd, I could not see her.
“The queen created the monsters!” someone from the crowd shouted.
“She started the war with the Unseelie!”
“She turned champions into monsters!”
I recognized the voice of the last shouter and turned as Lady Cara appeared among the crowd. Her silver hair made her stand out, and a loud murmur started to travel across the crowd quickly as fae slowly recognized their last trial champion.
“Isn’t that the Silver Lady?” A young boy asked, and his friend nodded as the soldiers dragged me by them.
The queen controlled the minds of the monsters for years, to make them attack fae, a girl’s voice echoed in my mind. The message was quick and as soon as I received it, I knew that everyone heard it too. She instigated the trials out of fear that the prophesied rightful heir to the throne would replace her. She killed thousands to stay in power.
“Lies!” the queen shouted. I didn’t know if she had heard the message, but judging by her tone, she was angry. “Get them! Get them all!”
Her eyes nearly popped as she shouted. Her right hand shook. The soldier's hand, which was wrapped around my arm, relaxed as he, too, paused in surprise.
“What are you doing?” the queen shouted at her soldiers. “Take them! Bring them to me!”
The soldiers did not move.
She did not like it.
“Traitors!” she screamed. “All of you! I shall do it myself if you do not obey your queen!”
She reached for the soldier closest to her.
I had seen her do this once more, before.
Still, I couldn’t believe it as the Queen of Light turned one of her soldiers into a monster, before the eyes of every Seelie living in Terlyth.
