Chapter 49: Jasmine

The tiny flicker of hope, which I’d worked hard to keep fed, died instantly as the queen turned one of her soldiers into a monster. His arms lengthened and wings sprouted out of his twisted back as he wailed in pain. The queen did not even watch his painful transformation, she moved on to the next as screams rose from the Seelie.

This was it. She wouldn’t stop.

“No!” I shouted, and for some reason, my voice sounded stronger than I’d felt. The queen paid no mind to my objection, but the guard who had been holding my arm released his grip and took a step back.

The other soldier kept holding my other arm though, and when I turned to look at him, he seemed conflicted.

“Let me go,” I told him, quietly and calmly as the queen reached the next soldier. “She can’t do this.”

The crowd was starting to move too. I could hear their loud murmur, growing stronger as more became shouts.

The soldier looked at me.

“You can stop her?” he asked.

I nodded, even though I wasn’t sure if that was the truth. My powers were gone. Even if the queen’s soldiers, taken aback by her vile actions, wouldn’t stop me, Lady Queill and Lady Dahlia were still on the stage with us, and their powers alone could make the queen win this.

But I had to try.

The guard released my arm.

There was movement in the crowd. Some were trying to get away from the monster, while others tried to fight the soldiers of the crown who didn’t seem to mind what the queen just did. In the distance, I saw another group of men and women trying to reach the center of the crowd where the action was. I recognized them and knew that the monster folk were here.

They would fight on my side even though our connection was no more.

“Stop!” I shouted at the queen as I turned around to walk toward her.

And shockingly, she did.

“You!” she shouted, her eyes oddly wide. “You did this!”

The lie she attempted fell upon deaf ears. No one paid attention to us anymore as the first monster jumped into the crowd, going straight for the kill.

“I did not,” I replied. “And you know it. Stop that monster now, or I’ll stop you myself.”

“How can you do that?” the queen asked sarcastically, but her eyes flickered with fear. “Your powers are gone.”

She looked at Lady Dahlia who was still standing at the back of the platform, then to Lady Queill. The two women gave her firm nods and took a step forward, preparing to stop whatever I was planning to do.

The monster caught my attention again, but this time, it was because it could no longer move. A second ago, it had been chasing the Seelie at the front, but now, it was trapped in a cage. That cage looked familiar, but as I felt Lady Dahlia’s tendrils entering my mind, I could not watch it anymore.

Don’t move, was the only command she gave me. And within seconds, I could not.

Let her go, a familiar voice entered my mind, pushing Lady Dahlia away. Outside my mind, Lady Dahlia screamed in agony, and soon, Lady Queill joined her. The two women fell to their knees, holding their heads.

I stared at the two of them in utter confusion.

I wasn’t doing this to them.

Then who was?

My question was answered within the next second.

Cari appeared on the back of the platform, lifting the mind block on us that had kept us from seeing her.

The queen saw her as I did and took a step back in fear.
