He fell with a loud thud.

“She didn’t create that final monster,” Dearen said. “The cages you conjured are still holding.”

“The soldiers don’t seem as eager to keep fighting,” I told him.

A silent murmur rose from the crowd around us. The Seelie watched intently to see what was happening on the stage.

The queen had stopped screaming.

Everyone looked at the queen and Jasmine now. The two figures appeared almost frozen in place as the queen... sobbed?

Her chest heaved with heavy breaths, and tears streamed down her face.

Jasmine stood still beside her.

Her eyes were closed, but she did not smile.

But she seemed more peaceful than I’d ever seen her be.

“What did she do?” I mumbled.

The queen brought her hands up to her face.

Jasmine opened her eyes and turned to us.

“It’s over,” Jasmine’s voice was loud as she addressed the whole crowd. “She’s healed.”

The cheer that rose from the crowd was like no other. I stared at Jasmine as she found me in the crowd, our eyes locking onto each other as she smiled.

We don’t have to fight anymore, she said into my mind.

And I believed her.

Epilogue

The queen looked up and smiled, meeting my gaze.
