“Can’t you heal her?” Cari asked. “I really want her to be punished for all she’d done.”

“I already healed her,” I said. “I told you. I didn’t do this to her. She did it to herself. She used her healing powers to cut off the part of her that allowed her to perform mind magic. It stunted her emotions. And once I healed her, all the things she did caused her mind to go bad.”

“She has double skill,” Cari said.

I nodded. The queen was a double, just like I was. Back when she was born, that sort of thing wasn’t uncommon, but still, to think she had done all she did to her own kind was unimaginable.

“Mind magic can turn one crazy,” Cari said, as though she read my mind.

“Denying any ounce of empathy will do that as well,” Amarra said on my other side.

“Monsters are everywhere,” the queen mumbled, smiling as though she was simply greeting me. “You know that don’t you?”

“I do,” I whispered. “You see? We cannot execute her, especially since we are planning to outlaw executions.”

Amarra seemed like she was about to object, but before she could, Cari intervened.

“That’s some good political thinking,” Cari said, “She is right. We have to follow the rules so that everyone will. She cannot execute the queen and then claim executions are bad. Fae won’t support Jasmine again if she does that.”

“I’m not doing it to gain their favor,” I mumbled. “I’m...”

“Doesn’t matter,” Amarra replied. “Cari is right. The queen can stay here, under observation. Now that she cannot extend her life using healing magic, she’s going to grow old pretty quickly and die anyway. If she heals before that...”

“She is already healed,” I repeated, feeling a slight bit of frustration. “I told you.”

“I know I know,” Amarra waved her hand dismissively. “I need to go and receive the delivery from the Unseelie orchards. I think we finally have enough to feed the city. Who could think that there were so many, undernourished humans? Tynan says most of them opted to move to the human world but I beg to differ. We might need to arrange a census, but I’ll talk to you when that happens.”

“Sure,” I replied. “See you.”

Amarra took a step forward as though she wanted to hug me, but then, she forced herself to turn away with a simple nod.

I appreciated it.

Cari and I started to walk away from the queen once Amarra left us. The hallways of the Light Palace were bright but empty.

“What are you going to do about the fae who sided with the evil queen?” Cari asked.

“They will be tried,” I replied.

Cari nodded. “How about me?”

“Your crimes were against the monster folk,” I said. “They already tried you.”

“And?” Cari asked. “What was the result?”

“They decided to pardon you,” I replied, smiling.

“So I am free?” Cari asked, her tone excited.

“You are,” I turned to her. “What will you do with that freedom?”

“I was thinking I could teach,” Cari said, surprising me quite a bit. “I realized that I like it very much. Teaching you was fun!”

“What did you teach me exactly?” I asked despite my smile.

“Everything you know!” Cari replied with a mocking grin. “But seriously. Do you think I can do it?”

“What?” I asked.
