“Teach,” Cari sighed.

“Of course, you can,” I replied. “You are one of the best mind magickers out there. Now that the Seelie court lost Lady Dahlia, the mind magickers guild could use your help. Since Orla is gone too, you might even work in the Unseelie lands if you want.”

Cari nodded.

The mentioning of Orla’s death was painful. As though she knew how I felt, Cari stopped talking.

We walked in silence for a bit.

“You always trust in me,” Cari finally said.

“You never let me down,” I replied.

Cari seemed like she was about to say something, but she stopped herself before she would. We kept walking away from the former Queen of Light in silence.

“I should get going,” Cari said when we reached the queen’s quarters.

“Why?” I asked.

“I still feel bad when I’m around monster folk,” she replied.

“But they think of you as redeemed now since you saved me,” I said.

“Still,” Cari said. “The fact that they forgave me doesn’t get rid of my guilt.”

“I get that” I replied. “But be back for dinner. I want us to celebrate our victory. We haven’t had a chance to simply enjoy it.”

She nodded and took off.

The guards opened the doors for me and I stepped in.

We hadn’t had a chance to redecorate the queen’s quarters, so as I walked into the meeting room, I felt like I was walking into someone else’s home.

That changed when I saw them.

Brigid, Casja, and Dearen stood by the window, laughing and joking as Muir brought the four of them drinks. Gethin and Kieran sat on the couches next to the hearth, talking until Kieran noticed my arrival and met my gaze with a smile.

“Jasmine!” he announced to the room, making everyone turn to me.

“Where were you?” Brigid asked, stepping away from the window. “We’ve been looking for you and no one seems to know where you are.”

“I was visiting the queen,” I replied.

“You are the queen,” Dearen said flatly.

That irked me, but I decided to ignore it.

“Well, I visited the former queen to show Amarra and Cari that she’s not well.”

“You did it so she won’t be executed?” Kieran asked.

I nodded.

“I think that’s too nice,” Brigid said, but Kieran walked up to me to stand beside me.

“I trust Jasmine’s decision,” he said.

“Thank you for the support,” I said, sliding my hand underneath his arm. “So shall we?”
