Feremir clicked his tongue as his eyes widened.

“Of course!” he said.

“Can you explain to us what you are talking about?” Brigid asked.

“In the prophecy,” Feremir said. “I saw the breaking of a crown.”

“We assumed it was the former queen’s crown, specifically,” Aislinn said. “But perhaps it was more general than that.”

Kieran met my gaze. I expected to see objection in him, but he seemed thoughtful.

“Can we do that?” he asked.

I couldn’t imagine a better question.

“We?” I asked, unable to help my smile. “You want to break the crown too?”

He nodded, his smile never withering.

“I think we should,” he said.

“That is going to require a lot of planning,” Casja said, but despite her statement sounding like an objection, I could see her eyes spinning as she thought of all the possibilities. “The lords and ladies of the realms will object for certain. We will need the commoners to support it to alleviate the pressure.”

“The resistance can help with that,” Feremir suggested.

“How about Fiona?” Gethin asked. “Will she agree to this?”

“She will,” Kieran replied. “I’m certain of it.”

“We can set up a council,” Brigid suggested.

“The monster folk will support Jasmine’s decision,” Muir added.

“If both realms break the crown,” Dearen commented. “Why keep them separate?”

“It would create a big logistical problem to join the two realms with the huge empty land in between,” Aislinn said. “I thought the monster folk wanted to settle on the in-between realms.”

As the others forgot about us and joined the discussion, I gestured at Kieran to follow me outside. He came, and no one noticed our departure. They were too focused on the future of the realms to notice.

We went out to the balcony. The Light Palace had the greatest view of Terlyth. The sun was coming down.

It was the perfect time.

“You are okay with this?” I asked him. “Really, okay with it? I know your family ruled the Unseelie for generations. It must be...”

“It’s not,” Kieran replied. “Fiona and I talked about this endlessly. We know there are other ways to live. Humans do it. Why can’t we?”

I nodded.

“But I still think we should unite the realms the classic way,” Kieran said.

“The classic way?” I asked, unable to help my smile. “What is that?”

“Marriage, of course,” he said. “A royal wedding would be the best way to end both reigns, would it not?”

“Is that your way of asking me to marry you?” I asked. “It’s not very romantic is it?”

“Do you have a response?” he asked, suddenly serious.

“I do,” I replied. “But I don’t think I want a royal wedding. We cannot force people to unite if they have no desire toward it. We should break the crown, and then, we can get married because we want to.”

“I take that as a yes,” he said, smiling.

I nodded.

“Then we agree,” he said. “Let’s break the crown.”
