“She was an earth elemental,” Marlian replied. “Now you are saying she is a mind magicker. That’s a double.”

She gave me a look.

“I didn’t know it had a name,” I mumbled.

“It doesn’t matter,” Marlian added. “If we cannot send thoughts, I will have to go into the castle myself to talk to Orla. You should stay here. I will come back with her.”

She walked quickly toward the door and grabbed her coat on her way out.

MARLIAN DIDN’T COME back until late that night. Despite Cari’s insistence that we could go downstairs to grab some food, we had eaten the food we had brought with us. We were getting ready to sleep when the door opened and Marlian walked in.

“Kieran,” she said, her tone calm and serious.

I knew at once that this could not be Marlian.

Casja and Gethin seemed surprised as Marlian turned to Orla before our eyes. Cari seemed unaffected by the transition, probably because her mind was protected against Orla’s influence.

“Orla,” I said, taking a step toward her to hug her.

“I’m sorry,” she said as we parted. “Your father... I could not.”

“Casja told me the whole story,” I said. “It wasn’t your fault.”

Orla did not seem to agree.

“Marlian,” I said. “Where is she?”

“She said she needs to buy some fabric,” Orla replied, a little smile appearing on the corner of her lips.

“Fiona,” I said, meeting Orla’s gaze. “Is she alright?”

“Actually,” Orla replied. “She wanted to talk to you.”

“How?” I asked.

“She is in my mind as we speak,” Orla replied. “She asks about Jasmine and the others.”

“Can you hide your mind conversation from Lady Queill?” Cari asked. “How?”

Orla did not respond with words, but I saw her gaze darting toward Cari as both of them became silent. Cari nodded after a few seconds, and then, Orla turned to me with a question in her gaze.

“They are all fine,” I said, remembering her question. “Jasmine turned all the monsters back into fae.”

“She did?” Orla smiled. “How?”

“We don’t know,” I replied. “Jasmine has been in a deep sleep ever since. The healers say she is healthy, but she does not wake up. They have set up camp in...”

“It’s enough that we know she’s fine,” Orla stopped me. “Don’t tell us where they are, just in case...”

“We came to help Fiona escape,” I said.

“No,” Orla said.

The certainty in her voice made my stomach clench. Confusion rose in me.

“What?” I asked.

“She is saying no,” Orla said apologetically. “She says you need to go to the prison to free the lords. Then, you will come back and take back your father’s throne. After that, we will go to Jasmine to wake her up. I might be able to.”
