Chapter 6: Feremir

“What—”

The tip of the blade touched my skin, but it did not pierce it. I wanted to struggle against it, but I knew that would not be wise.

“Don’t make a sound.”

The fear made it almost impossible to think, but the feeling came without conscious thought. As soon as I heard her voice, I knew who this was. And I knew she would not harm me. Or at least, I hoped she would not...

“What are you doing?” I asked, keeping my voice low as the cold touch of the blade made me shiver. “We are on the same side.”

“Oh, we certainly are not,” Aislinn replied angrily. “I trusted you. I put myself in danger to show you the truth. I thought...”

She sounded disappointed. My heart warmed for her. It was true. Aislinn was a spy. I knew that because I had followed her in the night and had seen the messages she had buried in the garden. She had tried to warn me about the queen multiple times.

“I know,” I whispered. “I know the truth now.”

I felt her hesitate.

“You do?” she asked.

“Why do you think I didn’t tell on you?” I asked.

Her blade on my throat relaxed, but she did not release me.

“Tell on me?” she asked. “You didn’t know.”

“I did,” I replied. “I saw you in the garden, digging.”

I did not want to say any more than that. I hoped Aislinn knew not to think about such things.

“Our thoughts are not safe,” I told her.

“I know that,” Aislinn replied, finally relaxing the blade completely. “I have been doing this for a while, I’ll have you know.”

I couldn’t help but smile.

Aislinn released me. Turning around, I met her suspicious gaze.

“You are not lying to me, are you?” she asked.

“No,” I replied. “I am sorry for everything.”

“You are?” Aislinn’s face twisted with surprise as she added.“So you do know.”

“I do,” I said.
