“The Singers?” I asked when she stopped talking.

“The resistance,” Aislinn replied. “They were called ‘Singers’ because they used minstrels to spread their ideas, but now, they use broader tactics and everyone just calls them the resistance.

When I excitedly grabbed her hands, Aislinn flinched. Still, she let me.

“There is a resistance?” I asked, my excitement making it difficult to quiet down my thoughts.

“Don’t get excited,” Aislinn warned me. “Yes. There is one.”

“Can I meet them?” I asked. “I can tell them what the queen is doing... I can...”

“You’re excited, Feremir,” Aislinn squeezed my hand. “Stop it.”

We were standing close to each other now.

“I can’t...” I said, realizing what I was doing. It was dangerous. But no matter how hard I tried, I could not let go of the excitement of finally having found some help.

Aislinn seemed to think about it only for a second. Then, she climbed on her toes and kissed me on the lips.

It was a quick kiss, wet and warm, but every other thought in my mind disappeared at once. As she pulled back, I could feel my heart pounding harder inside my chest.

I felt something right then. Someone, uninvited, entered the room with us; not with their body, but only with their mind. I tried to think only about Aislinn and her lips as the feeling that someone was inside of my mind made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. It was easy to do. Aislinn was standing before me, smelling perfect and looking as beautiful as always. I had always been infatuated with her, and now, she had kissed me.

It was easy to think about her and her only.

The mind magicker’s tendrils left me as quickly as they came.

“Thank you,” I said, and her cheeks became red at once. “I mean for protecting my thoughts.”

“You’re welcome,” Aislinn replied, taking a step away. “They are gone?”

“I think so,” I said. “I hadn’t been thinking about that exciting information for a while.”

I thought I saw the corner of her lip curling with a smile, but she hid it.

“We should go there so that we can talk safely,” I said. “I have things to tell them. Important things...”

She gave me a suspicious look.

“If you decide I am not to be trusted,” I said. “You can make sure I don’t come back to the palace. But I need to talk to them, Aislinn. I need to make sure they know all there is to know.”

“The queen is planning something, isn’t she?” Aislinn asked.

“I think so,” I replied. “I don’t know what exactly it is yet, but I think I can help.”

“Okay,” Aislinn said. “I will reach out to you once I make a decision. In the meantime, try not to think about it.”

“I will,” I replied.

Normally, it would be impossible. But now, I had the memory of her kissing me to distract me from any other thought whenever I wanted.

And as though she knew exactly what I was thinking, Aislinn’s cheeks were flushed red as she left my room quietly and closed the door behind her.
