Chapter 7: Fiona

Ijumped from the bed in excitement as Orla walked into my room. The guard outside had changed today. A burly man, with arms thick enough to pull a tree off the ground, glared at me before the door closed behind Orla.

She no longer kept the illusion on me, but I knew what the guard had seen. As she walked up to me, her expression told me she did not like my indiscreet excitement about my servant.

“Sorry,” I said before she could scold me. “I forgot.”

“You cannot forget these things, princess,” Orla kept her voice low. “That man is loyal to Lugh. I can hear his thoughts about you quite clearly. If he knows I’m not actually a servant, I can no longer stay here.”

I nodded, looking down.

“The prince is waiting,” Orla said, taking a few steps to stand right before me so that she could talk in an even quieter voice. “I think your claim to the throne convinced him.”

“Was he really willing to let Lugh rule?” I asked, looking up. “That doesn’t sound like Kieran at all.”

“I think he’s broken,” Orla said. “Your father’s death and what happened to Jasmine made him lose hope. He will do as you say, but...”

“What happened to Jasmine?” I asked. “She was fine the last I’d seen her.”

I realized then that Orla’s nose had reddened a bit. Her dark brown eyes glimmered as she met my gaze. She held her right hand in her left as though she needed strength.

“Apparently, she is in a deep sleep,” Orla replied.

I relaxed. For a moment, I had thought Jasmine was dead.

“How?” I asked. “Why?”

“She cured all the monsters,” Orla said. “All the fae who had been monsters are back to their true selves thanks to her. They think she got lost in their memories. At least, Cari does.”

Cari. She was the one who had lured us into the queen’s trap, causing me to be captured.

“We shouldn’t trust that girl,” I said. “She shifts between alliances like a coward lord.”

Orla didn’t say anything to that.

“You told Kieran you would discover the location of the prison,” Orla said. “How are you going to do that?”

“I have a plan,” I told her and enjoyed the surprised expression on her face. “You thought I was just making things up?”

“I did,” Orla confessed.

“I might need some time, but I think I can get into the King’s Tower to search for a clue,” I said. “And if that doesn’t work, I’ll simply put a knife to Lugh’s throat and make him tell me.”

Orla saw my anger and did not like it.

“You know you can’t do that,” she said. “This has to be done in secret. If they know...”
