I did not want to leave Amarra. I did not know why she was leaving Tynan, but it seemed wrong. She did not want to. She could...

Please, Jasmine, the voice said, this time, ringing stronger in my mind. Please listen to me. I do not have much time.

I can’t do it, I said. I remember myself now, but I cannot stop this.

Yes, you can, the voice replied.

How?

The monsters are no longer here, the voice said. These are fragments of their memories, trapped within you. Those were all your dreams. And now, you came into my mind. You already saved yourself from the trap. Now, all you have to do is wake up.

I cannot, I said.

Wake up!

I cannot, I screamed.

Wake up!

I could feel her hands now. She was caressing my hair.

She was right. This wasn’t where I belonged.

As I thought about what that meant, I started to feel. The air was warm. The bed underneath me was soft.

My mind was not a trap. I could leave it.

When I opened my eyes, I saw her through my blurred vision.

Her black hair looked beautiful even in the darkness. Her hand felt warm on my forehead.

“You woke up,” she said, smiling as she wiped off a tear. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry for all you’ve been through.”

She hugged me. I did not know who she was, but the hug felt warm and full of love.

Was this another dream?

Was I reliving the memories of yet another monster?

She straightened next to the bed and met my gaze. Her expression became stiff and serious.

“Don’t be scared,” she said softly.

“Scared of what?” I asked.

My voice was cracked, as though I hadn’t used it for a while.

The tent door behind her burst open and two men darted inside. They were carrying weapons and they moved quickly. The blond man conjured chains and at once, Amarra was pulled back from me.

“Who are you?” the black-haired man asked.

I remembered him from a dream.

The woman looked up to meet my eyes as she spoke. I felt her tendrils leaving my mind and only then, I knew she had been inside.

“My name is Amarra,” she said. “I’m Jasmine’s mother.”
