Chapter 9: Jasmine

Istared at the woman who claimed to be my mother.

She was on her knees. The chains around her wrists pulled her arms back as she refused to look back at the men. She was focused on me.

“Where am I?” I asked, averting her gaze and looking at the two burly men instead.

They were not dressed like soldiers, yet they carried themselves as such. They stood straight and kept the woman in control, but they did not look at her.

“We are in the in-between realms,” the blond man said, pushing his hair to the back using his free hand. “You have been sleeping since you saved us.”

“Saved you?” I asked.

Before he could respond, I pushed the blanket off myself. I was wearing a white cotton dress. When I tried to get up, my head started to spin.

“You should stay in bed,” the woman said.

I wanted to object, but the spinning of my head would not stop. I couldn’t even sit up yet, let alone get out of bed.

Although I did not want to admit it, she was right. I had to adjust to being awake.

I leaned against my pillow and stared up at the man, ignoring her caution to the best of my abilities.

“What do you mean I saved you?” I repeated my question.

“You saved all the monsters,” the man replied. The smile on his lips faded as he added; “You don’t remember?”

That could not be true.

The monsters were suffering still...

I’d seen it. I’d experienced it.

“I thought I failed,” I said.

“You didn’t,” the man with the black hair replied. When he smiled, his long face almost became round and his mustache twitched. His strong hands relaxed from a fist. “We wouldn’t be standing here if you had failed.”

“I...” I hesitated. “But you were all suffering.”

“They were,” Amarra said. “Their memories were stuck within you. You didn’t let go of it.”

I did not meet her eyes.
