“Well, goodnight,” he said.

“Goodnight,” I replied as he turned around to leave.

I stayed there for a bit longer, staring at Amarra’s tent. Then, finally, I pushed myself off the tree.

“I don’t think that will be a problem for me,” I whispered.

The guards stationed at her door quickly stepped aside as soon as I reached them. Their eyes briefly met mine, but they did not ask me any questions. It was a common thing in the monster camp — no one ever questioned my movements.

The inside of the tent was warmer. Amarra was sitting on the bed, her hands covering her face as she put her elbows on her knees and bent into two as though she wanted to be uncomfortable on purpose.

She didn’t look up as I got inside.

“I told you,” she said. “I won’t talk to anyone else. Just her.”

“I’m here,” I said.

She looked up. The shock on her face surprised me. After all, she was a mind magicker, she should’ve been aware of my thoughts before I came in.

“Jasmine,” she said. “I thought you wouldn’t come.”

“I didn’t come for you,” I snapped and immediately realized how childish I sounded. “I came to ask you some questions.”

“Ask them,” she said. “I’ll tell you everything.”

“Who was that man?” I asked. “Tynan... I saw him in your memory.”

She seemed taken aback. She probably had thought I would ask her why she had abandoned me to Kalyden and Oren. The fact that she was surprised satisfied something deep in me.

“He was...” She paused. “He is your father.”

I had guessed so.

“Did he know?” I asked. “That you abandoned me?”

She seemed like she wanted to correct that choice of words, but she decided against it.

“No,” she replied. “He doesn’t know that you exist.”

The spark of hope that quickly appeared inside of me was difficult to ignore. I had a parent who had not abandoned me, at least not intentionally. But still, there could be many reasons as to why Amarra had chosen to hide my existence. There was a chance Tynan would not want anything to do with me, even if he knew I existed.

“Who is he?” I asked. “Was he married? Is that why...”

“No!” she replied. “He was a lord.”

“Oh,” I said. “And you were a commoner...”

“No,” Amarra said.

She looked at me as though she were waiting for me to ask more questions.

“Do we have to keep up this guessing game?” I asked.

She took in a deep breath before she started to speak.

“I was a spy for the Queen of Light,” she started. “I was trained at the palace and sent to Winter Castle to gather information on the Unseelie.”

I had not been expecting that...
