“She was young,” Lord Petret said.

They exchanged a knowing glance.

“So that was a test?” I asked, trying to get back to our conversation.

“Yes,” Lord Tynan said. “I wanted to make sure I can trust you.”

“And now?” I pushed. “Does that change anything?”

“It does,” he said. “If we had more time, I would also test your ability to follow a plan, but we don’t.”

“What plan?” I asked.

He made a gesture and sat on his bed again. When he spoke, his voice was so low that I had to lean in to hear him.

“They give us food every morning through those mirrors,” he said. “The food is poisoned as Lord Petret said. They feed us once per day, we ration it. Once a week, they use those portals again to give us enough antidote for the whole prison.”

This was not the first time he was considering this.

“When is the next antidote delivery?” I asked.

“Four days,” Lord Tynan replied.

“We don’t have that much time,” Casja said. “We kidnapped a soldier. Once they know he’s gone...”

“They won’t do anything,” Cari said. “I have them.”

“Their mind magickers come to sweep our minds every two days,” Lord Tynan said. “They’ll know.”

“So?” I asked. “How does that help us?”

“The food and the antidote come from the same room,” he said. “And they feed us early in the morning.”

“In a few hours?” Cari asked.

Tynan nodded.

“Once they open the portals, we’ll go through and find the poison in the kitchen,” Tynan said. “Then, I’ll brew the antidote myself.”

“Can you do that?” Cari asked excitedly.

Tynan gave her an odd look. “I can, once I get my powers back.”

We already knew that the prisoners were given potions to take away their powers. That much had been revealed to us by the soldier whom Cari had questioned.

“How do you know you’ll have enough time before the poison kicks in?” I asked.

“I know what they gave us to take away our powers,” Lord Tynan responded. “It is a common potion used on prisoners so they can’t use their powers in an attempt to escape. The remedy is easy and takes effect immediately.”

“We don’t know what will be waiting for us on the other side once we cross the portal,” I said.

“There will be two guards,” Lord Tynan said. “They keep the poison in the kitchen.”

“How do you know that?” I asked.

“I could smell it brewing in there,” he said. “They prepare the poison and add it to the food as it's being cooked. Some poisons lose effect when left outside for too long, and based on my observations and experiments, this is that type of poison. They put it in the food.”

“The food is always warm when it’s delivered,” Lord Petret added. “They send it to us as soon as it is cooked.”
