“As soon as you are ready, son,” he said.

Gethin nodded.

“Make sure no one sees us,” Tynan said to Cari. “We will be going up to the mirrors, to the other side of the room. The guards are outside, sitting around.”

I didn’t know why Tynan talked to Cari as though she wouldn’t already know all of that, but Cari nodded and did not seem to be offended. She did not look toward the mirrors though.

“We don’t need the mirrors,” Gethin said. “We can open a portal in the back of the room, where it’s more private.”

Cari turned to Gethin. The tension between them was there, as always. But they had done this a few times before.

“I’ll show you the room,” she said. “We don’t know where it is, but the image of the room should be enough for you to open it.”

“Don’t you need to take the image from Lord Tynan’s mind?” I asked Cari.

“I already did,” she said.

Lord Tynan nodded.

“I need a blade,” Lord Tynan said to me. “I don’t have powers and portaling isn’t very useful in a fight.”

Gethin smiled.

“I was a monster once,” he said. “I know how to fight.”

Lord Tynan seemed unfazed by that revelation.

“You don’t have your claws anymore,” he said.

Gethin showed Lord Tynan his blade and the latter nodded.

“I still need something to fight if it comes to it,” Lord Tynan said, opening his palm expectantly.

I grabbed the handle of my sword and attempted to pull it out. He stopped me.

“No,” he said. “I’m much better with a blade. Something small and sharp...”

“I don’t have one,” I said.

“I know,” he replied.

He opened his palm toward Cari.

“All right,” she said, sighing. As I watched, she reached into her coat and pulled a blade I had never seen before. It seemed she had a hidden pocket in there somewhere.

She gave it to Lord Tynan. He took it but did not attempt to hide it underneath his clothes.

“Are we ready?” He asked, staring at Gethin.

I turned to Gethin. He was staring at Cari although the idea of her implanting an image in his mind scared him.

They stared at each other for a few seconds before Gethin finally turned away. He grabbed the jug of water on Lord Petret’s desk and dumped it on the ground.

Only a few seconds passed before a shimmer appeared on the water’s surface. The kitchen solidified within seconds. We saw it through the mirror placed near a large table, but since we were looking at the puddle on the ground, it was quite disorienting to see the kitchen from the side.

There was no one in the kitchen.

Gethin turned to Lord Tynan.
