I paused. “You are following me around because I’m your duty.”

“Yes,” he said. “In case... The camp is safe, but we can’t risk something happening to you.”

I ignored the meaning behind his words. I did not want to be protected or followed around like a queen, but I could not ask him to leave me alone either, not without hurting his feelings. As I kept walking to Amarra’s tent, he followed.

There was no light in her tent, but as I let my mind magic traverse before me, I knew she was awake. Her thoughts were open to me and me only, but as I entered her tent, I did my best not to listen.

She was still on her bed, sitting up with her feet to the ground. As I came in, she looked up and met my gaze in the darkness.

Leof didn’t come in behind me, but stayed outside to keep watch at her door.

“I need to talk to you,” I told her. “The woman I heard, she was far away. It took them four hours to ride here on horseback.”

“That’s not possible,” Amarra said. “Unless...”

“Unless what?” I asked.

She looked up. I saw her face twisting with worry as though she had any right to feel such things about me.

“You reached the monsters from far away,” she said. “That shouldn’t have been possible either. Perhaps there was a connection between all the monsters and former monsters retain that connection. Perhaps you can reach them all, wherever they are.”

It was a scary thought, and yet, Cari could also was able to control all the monsters despite the distance between her and them. I did not seek to control them, but that did not mean a connection wasn’t there for me to tap into whenever I wanted.

Then, a thought occurred to me.

Gethin was with Kieran and the others. We hadn’t heard from them since they’d left and I was worried about it constantly.

“You should give it a try,” Amarra said, as though she had read my mind.

I closed my eyes. The only thing I could feel there was darkness and Amarra. But as I extended myself, I started feeling more of them.

The former monsters at camp... They were all here, ready to let me connect with them, whenever I wanted. Their minds were open to me, and although I did not wish to hear their private thoughts, I knew I could talk to them, whenever I wanted.

And I could cast that net a lot wider.

There were monsters all over the realms. Every one of them was a source of light that I could touch and not burn.

And some of them, I had already met.

“Gethin?”
