“You kept it from us,” I said, trying to keep my voice low so that we would not alert the guards to our presence.“If we knew, we could have come up with a better plan that would not involve sending Gethin in there blind. You kept it from us and put all of us in danger because you needed to get your hands on the antidote as soon as possible. Isn’t that true?”

Once again she met my gaze. I could not grasp how she was doing that without her sight. I could not feel her inside my mind, but perhaps she was using Casja’s eyes now.

“Are you surprised, dark prince?” she asked, her tone once again mocking. “I am evil, aren’t I? Gethin was right about not trusting me.”

“Trying to make me feel guilty about not being able to trust you is not going to work, not anymore,” I said. “Once this is done, I want you gone. Take the antidote and leave.”

“You are going to give me the antidote anyway?” she asked. Her voice was flat.

“Of course, we will,” Casja replied.

“And then,” I insisted. “You will leave.”

“That’s all I want,” Cari said. “Do you think I like watching you all day, riding your high horse and judging everyone else? No. I will gladly take the antidote and leave as soon as I can.”

“Good,” I said.

Cari scoffed.

As I tried to push down my anger, I saw movement from the corner of my eye. When I realized it was the same guard from yesterday, I ignored him, but the quick interruption helped with my anger.

It was difficult to let go of that anger for good. Cari had lied to us, again.

“Any news?” Lord Petret approached us, breaking the momentary silence that had befell our group.

I turned to him.

“No,” I said, sounding harsher than I had intended.

“Don’t worry, son,” he said. “Lord Tynan is highly capable. They will return with the poison.”

“I hope so,” I said.

And as though our words called onto them, the puddle that Gethin had left behind started to shimmer. Casja got up excitedly, as I braced myself for a fight.

But there was none.

Gethin and Lord Tynan climbed out of the portal. Casja was up, greeting Gethin as Gethin showed her the vial of poison he had. She smiled.

“Kieran,” Gethin said. “I spoke with...”

I heard a gasp behind me and spun around. Gethin stopped speaking as my eyes landed on the guard.

The guard’s mouth was popped open. He was looking right at us.

Our eyes met.

That shouldn’t have been possible.

“Cari,” I said trying to keep my calm. “Are you sure you have control over that guard?”

There was a short pause.

“What guard?” Cari finally asked.

A sudden, overwhelming coldness rushed from my stomach to the rest of my body as realization hit.

She wasn’t in my mind.
