Her eyes shot daggers at me. "Tell me, Nico. If you're potentially going to hurt me, I want to know details. I want to understand. Tell me!"

"We go out and have sex with women, okay!"

"Like together?"

I nodded, "Sometimes separate women, sometimes the same one, but either way it's like a test. If I can't control it, he's there to stop me."

"And have you been able to control it."

I stared at the carpet, unable to look her in the eyes as I shook my head.

"You're the first one, but like I said. I couldn't move, and I think knowing I couldn't do anything forced me to give in, calm down and enjoy it. You have no idea the relief I felt knowing you'd walk away unscathed."

She smirked. "Well, I didn't really, but because of your brother. Luca was pissed."

"Yeah, he was, but no matter how mad he is, he would never injure a woman he cared about."

Catalina fell silent, seemingly lost in thought.

"How long has it been since your last girlfriend?"

"Seven years."

"Seven years!" Her mouth fell open in shock. "That's a really long… Wow!"

I shrugged, "I told you I don't do relationships anymore, and I meant it."

She held up her good hand, "Okay, okay. So, you had a handful of relationships. Those women walked away with a few bruises. Don't you think it's time to try again?"

"No." I shook my head. "You don't understand, Catalina. Not all of them walked away. The last one…” My voice drifted off and I couldn’t fully bring myself to say the words.

Catalina looked at me expectantly.

I gulped, “The last one is dead. I killed her."

Chapter eight

Catalina

I felt stupid and I knew it was irrational, but somehow the constant warnings from the boys that someone was out to harm me had put my nerves on edge. Usually, I would ignore such nonsensical notions, but the fact that I had been in two incidents now was starting to become too coincidental.

So now, the fact that a nurse who didn't exist had been seeing me in the hospital and had been in physical contact with me, just sent me into panic mode.

How many times had this person come into my room while I slept?

When I messaged Nico, I was shocked when he came bursting through my hospital door just fourteen minutes later and got me the hell out of there. When we arrived back at their manor, I felt a huge sense of relief. This had been my safe refuge for several months and it felt like another home, a place with no more surprises. But that didn’t last long.

My eyes widened as Luca came in wearing gym shorts and a singlet, breathing heavily from a prior exertion. The material clung to him with sweat as his chest rose with every breath, accentuating the muscles beneath. The hint of a tattoo could be seen on his pectoral muscle, and it peeked out from his neckline and ascended up his neck, only adding to his dark and sexy vibe. I had never seen him out of his suits before, and the sight of him all sweaty and watching me intensely made me shiver inside.

As if one surprise wasn’t enough, Nico’s confession hit me like a shockwave.

Nico killed a woman?

I didn't want to ask but I had to know. "What happened?"

He shook his head, “This is something I don't want to remember, Catalina. Let's just say, I went too far.” Nico went silent, and just when I was about to say something, he spoke again, looking at his hands like they had something despicable on them. “Her neck… it just broke while we were… I didn't mean to. I was just holding her down, and then she was gone.” He shook his head again, as if trying to rid himself of the thought. “No matter how hard I try, I still see her eyes staring at me. Lifeless. Accusing… Her name was Beth.”

Watching Nico in pain made me want to help him heal. It was obvious he regretted his actions, and it was an accident. An accident of passion.
