His cell chose that moment to chime from somewhere in the bedroom. He stepped back reluctantly and said, “I’d better answer that.”

She nodded and smiled. “You probably should.”

He stalked into her bedroom and pulled his cell out of his cargo pants he’d abandoned hastily last night on the floor. “Liam speaking.”

“Liam, it’s Aiden.”

“Aiden,” Liam said in return, his chest tightening in premonition as his brother exhaled harshly. “What’s up?”

“It’s our sister.” Aiden paused, then said roughly, “Sienna’s been hurt. A car accident. She’s in hospital now.”

“What?”

“I can’t tell you any of the details, right now you know as much as I do. I’m on my way to the hospital now.”

His pulse drummed in his ears. “I’ll be there in an hour.”

He disconnected the call, his mind blank for a handful of seconds as he tried to process it all. His sister was hurt, possibly seriously injured. His vision distorted. He’d had such a short time getting to know his sister, he couldn’t lose her now.

But he couldn’t deny that his parents were taken from him in a car crash. It was history repeating itself.

“Liam, what is it?”

He shook his head, unable to articulate any words. What could he say?

“Liam? You’re scaring me.”

He dragged a hand over his face, trying to focus on the woman in front of him, the woman who was staring at him with glittering eyes in a white face. “I-I have to go,” he said numbly. “My sister has been in a-a car accident.”

She stepped forward, her arms wrapping around him. “I’m sorry.” She stepped back, blinking up at him. “You’re in shock. You can’t drive in that state.” She stepped back. “I’ll drive you.”

Chapter Twelve

Harper pulled into the front entrance of the hospital’s emergency department. Liam swung open the door and, halfway to climbing out, he paused and turned around. “You’re not coming in?”

Her heart palpitated even as she threw him a bright smile. “This is a private matter between you and your family.” She swallowed hard. “I’ll go back to your penthouse and wait for you there. Ring me when you need me to pick you up again.”
