“Don’t you remember anything outside?” he asked softly.

Her stomach dipped, her chest compressing. “Of course I do.”

He pointed to a corner shop. “We used to ride our bikes there just so we could share a milkshake.”

She nodded, the memory both nostalgic and painful. How did their happiness turn so sour? Even her present happiness would only be a fleeting thing. “We did.”

He nodded to a park, the swings presently empty. “How many times did I push you on one of those swings while you sailed high into the air while talking about your future dreams?’

“Like having kids, a family?” she reminded him sharply.

He nodded. “Yeah, like that.” He leaned forward even as the limousine turned a corner. “What happened to that dream, Luna?”

The limousine slowed, and her stomach pitched in revolt at seeing the brick veneer house the driver stopped in front of. She turned back around to face him, her hands clenched by her sides and her jaw tight. “You happened, Aiden.”

Chapter Thirteen

Aiden wasn’t surprised by her vehemence. Not just because of the question he asked when he’d once been a big part of her dreams—just as she’d once been a big part of his dreams—but because of the fact his driver had stopped in front of her parents’ home.

Parents she hadn’t seen in quite some time.

He might have overstepped his boundaries, but he wouldn’t feel guilty about it. If there was anything he could do to heal the rift between Luna and her parents, then he’d do it. Especially knowing he might have inadvertently caused that rift.

“I never meant to shatter your dreams, Luna.”

Her face tightened. “Just my heart, then?”

He held her stare, needing her to see just how sorry he was about the past. “You know I never meant for that to happen, either.”

He’d been young and stupid, and too wrapped up in his own grief to see anyone else’s.

“Do I?” she said quietly, but with her voice throbbing with tension. She lifted her gaze to take in her old family home. “Is this your way of making up for it?” she asked tersely.

“Your parents miss you, Luna.”

Her breath shuddered out. “You rang them?” At his nod, she said tightly, “It was up to me to decide to visit them, not you.”
