The bang of the double doors closing echoed around the pool enclosure as I wandered out of the changing rooms. I hadn’t felt right since my unexpected run-in with Darcy a few weeks ago. I wanted to talk to her, but how do you tell someone you care about that you lied about your dad because you wish the abusive prick was in a casket?
I hadn’t seen her around school either, so the opportunity hadn’t really presented itself.
“Was someone here, coach?” I asked, looking at the expanse of water that was all mine for the next couple of hours. Coach had booked the entire pool to avoid any distractions. We were working on a new plan to get my time up and had confirmed there would be college scouts at the next meet. No more fuck-ups for me. I was back on track.
Coach screwed up the paper he had been reading and tossed it into a nearby wastebasket.
“Nothin’ but net,” I joked.
“Wrong sport. Now get in the pool,” he ordered with a glare.
I shrugged, took a run-up, and dived into my element. The one place I truly belonged. No need to worry about girls, or parents, or expectations. Just the freedom of the water.
