His stare heats my cheeks, and again, my choice of words could have been better.

“Are you vocal in bed, too?”

I choke on my curly fry and wash it down with my shake.

“Sorry,” he mumbles, a hint of a frown forming. “I’m not sure where that came from.”

Yes, he does.

“You want to know if the coach’s daughter who’s banned from boys, dating, and anything that resembles the life of a modern nineteen-year-old girl, is still a virgin.”

As I take another bite of my burger, it’s Magik’s turn to choke down his mouthful.

“Jeez, how the hell did we move from pickles to virginity so fast?”

I wiggle my eyebrows. “Well, I’m not a virgin.”

Please, somebody, slam my mouth shut!

Why am I even telling him this?

But nope, I keep going.

Because I need to justify the comment.

“While my dad pretends I’m still in middle school, I only make him believe I follow his ridiculous rules so he leaves me alone.”

Magik eyes me silently while he finishes his meal. “Is that what you were doing at the party? Looking to hook up with a random guy?”

I contemplate my answer. “What if I was?”

His eyes narrow and his jaw ticks. “Not my place to say, but you definitely deserve more than a one-night stand and a headline in the Ohio State gossip rag.”

Nodding, I wipe my mouth with the napkin. “Do you honestly think if I was looking for a hook-up, I’d have taken off with you?”

Fuck, why am I still talking?

“Ouch,” he groans, pretending to pull a dagger from his chest.

“I didn’t mean it like that.”

I throw my scrunched-up napkin across the table at him to help lighten the blow.

Back in the car, I don’t want the night to end. “Do you think I could crash at your place?”

The way Magik’s eyes bug out, I worry I’ve overstepped or severely misread the situation.

“Sorry,” I wave my hand, urging him to continue driving and to stop looking at me. “It’s only that my dad thinks I’m staying at a friend’s place tonight and since I left the party without them…”

“Ah, shit. Paris, I’m happy to give you a place to crash, but…”

“But I’m the co…”

“Don’t even say it,” he warns, pumping his size thirteen foot on the brake pedal and pulling over.

“Forget I asked.” I’m so stupid. This was all a big mistake. I should never have gone to that dumb party, and I could have saved myself the embarrassment.

“Paris, look at me.”
