Wyatt glanced at me, and I decided I was the one who should answer her question.

“I’ve already explained to Wyatt that there isn’t anything he can do to convince us to sell any portion of our land, but I’ve agreed to have dinner with him this weekend, so he can plead his case,” I revealed. “You have nothing to worry about.”

“So, why haven’t you told us that you’ve been seeing Wyatt then?” my mom pressed.

I panicked. “We’re not seeing each other like that.”

“If I may clarify,” Wyatt interrupted. “If what Rhea has already told me about the farm is the case, it’s completely okay. But I will say, I’m more than interested in having something a bit more meaningful with Rhea that has nothing to do with business. If it was up to me, we’d be seeing each other like that.”

My stomach dropped as my jaw fell open.

He couldn’t be serious.

Where was this confidence coming from?

Granted, he’d hinted at liking me, but I didn’t think his feelings or interest were so strong that he’d want to relay that information to my family at this juncture.

My mom and grandma sat there, quietly assessing Wyatt, but making no attempt to hide that was precisely what they were doing. He didn’t seem to mind, but I was a mess.

Eventually, my grandmother said, “I recommend the strawberry.”

My eyes nearly fell out of my head.

I had been convinced she was going to give him a piece of her mind, that she was going to tell him to stay far away from me and not try to take advantage of me.

The chipper edge in her tone had me—and likely Wyatt—believing she wanted something to come of this.

I wouldn’t allow that to happen.

There were too many memories to preserve. Grandma’s judgment was probably so clouded now with all she was feeling over Grandpa missing their anniversary.

My mom’s eyes were still narrowed on him, which only proved I was correct. She was skeptical, and I had every reason to be as well.

“That sounds delicious,” Wyatt replied with a grin on his face.

When he turned his attention to me, I jerked my head toward the counter.

We walked in that direction away from my family, and once I was behind the counter, I said, “You don’t have to get strawberry.”

“I think I’d like to try it, if that’s okay with you,” he returned.

I nodded. “In a cup or a cone?”

“I’ll go for the cone.”

Without delay, needing something to busy myself in an effort to try to calm my nerves, I went about getting Wyatt his ice cream cone. If I thought I’d done a good job of hiding how I was feeling, Wyatt proved he could read me like a book.

“You’re frazzled right now,” he noted as he took the cone from me and slid a twenty across the counter. “I’ve never seen you like this.”

That made two of us.

Unsure what to say, I busied myself with the register. If I’d been in the shop alone when he arrived, I probably would have given him the cone on the house, but I needed the distraction.

So, I took his money, counted out his change, and slid it back across the counter. When I lifted my gaze to Wyatt’s, I saw him licking the strawberry ice cream and could do nothing but focus on his mouth.

Judging by the glint in his eyes, I had a feeling he knew precisely what he was doing and was enjoying every second of the turmoil he was causing me.

Eventually, after he sat down on one of the stools in front of the counter, he asked, “Is everything okay?”
